Okay. This rant started shortly after 9-11 when a friend of mine told me of an owner of the convenience store on his street who was from Pakistan and started dressing like the Mexican immigrants because if people thougth he was Mexican, they didn't hassle him so much for being a foreigner. I thought, "Damn, if that wasn't so sad, it'd be funny." I recently ran into another convenience store clerk who was obviously middle-eastern. Being interested in middle-eastern music, dance, and culture, I asked him where he was from. In a gruff voice he said, "Northern Africa." I started to just finish my business there and leave, but instead felt the need to apologize for being rude if I implied there was something wrong with being a foreigner. He ended up appologizing as well and explained that he was actually from Egypt, and that people have been giving him a really hard time when they found out he was middle eastern. We then went on to have a nice 10-15 minute conversation about middle easternmusic and "belly dance". Even more recently I have met a very intelligent, charming girl originally from Taiwan who is a model and clothing designer. She reads and writes english almost perfectly, but she does not speak it so well. She has also told me that she can't wait to move back to LA because people are mean to her here because she's different and doesn't speak very well. Now enough is enough people. I think it's time to remember that unless you are of Native American decent, your family too were once foreigners to this land. So be nice or leave!!

Back in the days when I was in the SCA, our household use to have a little motto (one among many) that went, "Learn, learn, learn. Show-off, show-off, show-off." I see too many people who seem to want to jump straight to the latter. Case in point: I just read in the most recent WAMEDA Newsletter that they had a great turn out for this years show and hafla, but had to cancel both days' workshops for lack of interest. HELLO!!! Everyone wants to BE SEEN with and by the biggest names in belly dance, but no one wants to go to the workshops to LEARN from those same masters of the artform? WTF?
