living in eventful times

Lost my ride

   Sun, September 28, 2008 - 9:30 PM
I guess it had to happen some day...turned my back for a moment, caught a flash out of the corner of my eye, and...
Gone. Simply gone.
My baby, my ride...sweet little silverblue nishiki roadbike (and i do mean small). with orange leather duct-taped seat, dirtier than she deserved to be, straight bars and a funny brake accelerator, rear rack and green pannier full of my ratty yet needed raingear.
I had her for 2 years, rode her thousands of km, but she came to me with over 100,000 city courier km under her wheels. I gave her new wheels but couriers would still ride up behind me downtown and say hey! isn't that Lana Fox's bike? She was a personality in the bicycle world.
I cry to think of her in a shopping cart, trundling through a DTES back alley.
I am grateful for all the pleasure she gave me, so much speed and freedom and joy.

just came back from theDTES, it was actually kind of cool talking to the folks there, gave them my card and told them to "keep an eye out"...there is even a sort of sympathy, they may be bike thieves but they can hear the story.

yes i have heard many amazing "bike came back" stories...the very next day, or six months later...in the meantime, more exercises in nonattachment...seems they just keep on coming!

gratitude for what i've got, gratitude for what i had.

but i just saw rev. emily the cycling priest, and she reassured me that there is indeed a very special place in purgatory for bike thieves.

ok i just got the most cool stolen bike come back...
my roommates(a couple) got both their bike stolen the same day, but not at home and not at the same place.
they both found their bike back the day after.
one came back at the same place(her work place)with a note saying " sorry for stealing your bike , it was really necessary...etc)
the other one was found at the bike rack of at value village , unlocked.
how peculiar is that??!!

I hope your story end like this one....

great story Manuel!

Carmen, I too had my baby of 12 years (!) stolen last year at Harmony Home...
little Orca blower, perfect headlight, panier, fenders, the lot.....
I still miss her....
the new bike just cant seem to live up to her
and i know it feels it because its cranks are often cranky!

my condolensces for sure but mostly prayers for her return!

well that sucks, sorry to hear it. remember when my BMX was stolen from outside the lotus a few years back? it took about a year, but the cops found it - and delivered it right to my door even! it was a little different than how i had remembered it (ie. stripped of all the shiny parts) but i was thrilled it came back anyway. i still have that lil BMX... if you want a zippy little replacement ride to get you by, you'd be more than welcome to it.

thank you all for all the great bike-came-back stories, and offers of new rides! i've got a backup...am on my peculiar bronze prototype mountainbike (with skookum components) -- it's a good bike but its a mountainbike and now that i've been spoiled by riding a roadbike i just want another one. it will happen in time.

went out and bought new raingear yesterday...just in time, it's starting to come down...
