Cat's Distraction
Leigh Ann
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 12:41 PMEventually Mark played in Annwn and then Larry, who played on and mastered their "Anarchy & Rapture" album. I learned the tune "Tam Lin" from Leigh Ann and subbed for her on a gig for "Race for the Cure". She came to see the Shanachie show at Faire and laughed heartily when she heard the hard shoes start in to that tune during the finale.
I also remember a certain wild fiddle jam with a bunch of fiddlers in my kitchen at a party some time back.... I think there was some Irish whiskey involved....
Sister of the bow and string,
Funny, strong, willful and talented.
Lover of music and motorcycle,
Philosopher and priestess.
You never did do anything in a small way...
We will miss your passion and humor,
Make those angels sing in tune.

I never knew her, but so many of my various sets of friends and acquaintances did that I felt as if I did, or at least should have. SOmeone told me that Brazen Hussy finished the PEERS fairy tale ball with Salisbury Hill and I got goosebumps. The next day I knew why.
Vaya con diosa, my lady... |

A feast for life and a greater feast for death!
In celebration of Leigh Ann's life and light, in profound respect for her passage. True Will be done. |

I didn't know her either, but I was at PEERS fairytale ball and Brazen Hussy did play for her.
Safe passage to the next plane, Leigh Ann. Something tells me strings will play your exit music. |

Gods, Cat - I've been thinking of you all week and wondering how you'd hear, hoping you wouldn't hear over email (her brother called me a few hours after it happened, which felt lucky to me, in a way). I picked up the phone to call you on Wednesday or so, but was at a total loss for words. (I always remember your number because of that dumb joke Larry used to tell. The first time she heard it, beer came out Leigh Ann's nose...)
The 'competitors' comment made me smile - I think the folks she admired most were the ones who challenged her in some way or another. She surrounded herself with chaotic, motivating artistic tension. I'm still mostly speechless, about the important stuff. Leaving that band was like the hardest breakup I've ever had, and now she's gone forever. I'm guessing I'll be seeing you at a wake soon. I wish this weren't the reason, but it will be a true pleasure to see you. Love, Billie |

I'm looking forward to seeing you too. I found out from Chris' post which, wasn't optimal, but there it is. Funny how so many people knew her from so many different places. ..

I found out on tribe.... That was hard. I didn't know Leigh Ann well but I was still quite upset when I found out what happened. When a spirit like that leaves us it shakes you up a bit. I am amazed at how many people have been affected by this... The news reached up here quickly through several different channels. I hope she is having a blast wherever she is right now, I hope she can feel all the energy that is bubbling about as people remember the times spent with her.

I had the honor of her playing at my handfasting. She was one incredible woman and musician. The world is a bit darker for her passing.

random thoughts
I heard about this back when it happened through other circles, but just joined Tribe and had to add my thoughts.
Leigh Ann performed my wedding ceremony back in 1992 with her then-husband David. It was a wierd mix of Irish Pagan/Jewish which suited our needs perfectly. There was enough of the Judaism to make Mike's Catholic relatives in the dark about the Pagan base. :-) She didn't take payment for weddings and we wanted to make her a gift, so we got ahold of a friend of a friend who supposedly sewed all the Faire/SCA/etc costumes Leigh Ann wore. She said that for the latest costume, a *pink* cloak would be perfect - I lined it in grey just in case that wasn't right - I didn't know LA well at the time but still felt she might not wear much pink. Turns out I may have been the instrument of a joke! I still wish I had made the green/brown and this is 15 years later... Anyway, the night of the wedding Daoine Sidhe was playing at the Freight and we went to hear them. We were too tired for the traditional wedding night activity anyway! That was the first time I saw a Zeta fiddle - very cool. Somewhere around here I still have the tape we bought from her at that gig. So, she made a big impression on me. There was magic at that wedding - Mike felt it too and he is not really a beliver in magic. We both held a cup and Leigh Ann held he hand over it during the ceremony - I kid you not when I say that electrical energy came from the ground and through both of us to that cup! This also reminds me of the other musicians that were there and are no longer with us. Michael Shames and Robin Wadsworth. Michael played bagpipes as we walked into the circle. Robin played flute with the band. We had Victorian ballroom... OK, long enough! -Sabrina |
