<div>It's very unfortunate that my home camp will more than likely not be attending Burning Man this year (Black Rock City Municipal Hardware Shoppe). So unfortunate that I didn't think it'd be worth my time trying to bust my broke ass out to the playa this year because it's hard to imagine a better place to camp and better folks to camp with. It would be the first year I've missed since I started going in 2001. I was ready to call it quits and put the playa aside for the next 2 years that I'll be getting ready for school in NZ, and the following 2+ years that I'll actually be in NZ...at circus school (and Kiwi Burn).

But there's always a silver lining....

Now it seems as though I will for certain be there this year. My wonderful friends at camp KAOS (Kick Ass Oral Sex) are intent on getting me to the playa with them and are using their "donation bucket" to help get me down there. The donations from this bucket usually go toward extra alcohol. How friggin' generous is that? They'd rather get me out there than bring loads of extra alcohol? That confuses me, but I'm not going to complain one bit.

I love KAOS even though I still feel like I don't know them very well.....I suspect that'll change in the coming months.
I have to be sure to make this year count, as it'll probably be my last ever unless the population shrinks and ticket prices stop growing.

(Edit 5/31/06: Nevermind, I'm not going to the Burn this year for several reasons which i may go into at some other time.)</div>

The nightmare that happened last night....

<div>Be aware that this might be a little graphic. It's my account of a horrible collision that I witnessed last night. Forgive the grammar.

I-5 Southbound, Friday night.

I'm driving through Fife on my way to Olympia. Aaron and Owen are my passengers. It's around 6pm rush hour. I'm in the fast lane behind an unmarked box truck....or was it the second lane over from the fast lane...hard to remember, I wrote that I was in the fast lane on the police report...that part comes later. The truck slowly starts to drift to the left. Looks like he's pulling over...but he's not slowing down and he's not signaling. I realize this driver is no longer conscious and has lost control of his vehicle. I think to myself, "Honk! Why don't you honk and try to get his attention?!" but instead I watch in horror as the truck barrels right through the median, which was a level patch of green at that part of the highway. We watch as his truck pulls more and more to the left into oncoming Northbound traffic, presumably still unconscious, he appears to hit something and then flips and rolls onto it's side and skids to a stop. I pull to the side of the road and the 3 of us run toward the accident.

We're the first people on the scene. I immediately detach from all emotion and all I know is that between now and when the ambulance shows up, we are responsible for doing what we can to help. We approach slowly. My first thoughts are that of explosion. Can't let that stop us from trying to help though. We run up to the front of the truck, which is resting on it's right side. The drivers eyes are wide open and he's still in his seat hanging by his seat belt. His arms are tattooed, he's wearing Carhartt overalls, he's a big guy....looks a lot like a guy that I might know. His windshield is gone. I don't notice any blood or horribly out of place body parts. He moves a bit when we start asking questions and we realize he's awake. I try to turn the key to the ignition, but it won't budge, we can't get the truck to turn off. I circle the vehicle to assess any potential hazards. There's liquid leaking from it. I touch the liquid with my fingertips and try to guess what it is. Definitely not gasoline, that's good...can't smell too well, but Aaron tells me it's diesel. I look up at the line of stopped cars who I knew had to be witnesses as well, sitting, watching....not helping. I return to the front of the truck and look at the guy again....that's when I see past the truck and notice there's another car that had been hit. It's driver side is crumpled downward. It looked like death. Owen and I run to see what we can do. I'm preparing for the worst as I approach the vehicle. I look toward the truck to see that Aaron and another man have cut the trucker out of his seat belt and helped him to the ground...they're walking him to the hill in the median. My attention turns back to the car. The drivers window is crushed so far down that you can hardly see the driver. The passenger side is unlocked....Owen opens it, turns off the ignition and takes a pulse. The young woman has a pulse but is unresponsive. Owen is asking her questions but she's not saying anything. I can see her making small, gasping movements. Owen leaves and I take his place. Her head is held down almost to her knees by the top of the car and also pushed into the steering wheel. It's plain to see that her neck would have snapped in half if her airbag hadn't deployed. Her face is covered by her blonde hair, which is full of glass. I can tell she's young, probably younger than myself. I try to pull her hair back to make sure there are no obvious wounds that need to be held shut. I see some blood on her hand, but nothing that needed immediate attention. She's still unresponsive. She can't say anything, but maybe she can hear me so I tell her she's going to be OK.

I get out of the car and notice that there is smoke pouring from the car's engine, which is exposed as the hood was crunched upward. Owen tells me to look for an extinguisher, as the engine has caught fire. I run to the truck but can't find an extinguisher. Finally someone finds one and puts out the engine fire. This is about the time that the ambulance, fire trucks and police start to show up. I'm standing at the drivers window and through the crack, I see the woman begin to lift her head every few seconds. Still coming out of unconsciousness. I tell her that she's OK, that the ambulance is here now and they're going to take care of her. I can see her face now. The pain hasn't hit her yet...she's trying so hard to wake up. There's something hanging from her lip or her cheek that I can't make out, but it must be the source of the blood that's on her hand.

Meanwhile, Aaron is keeping the trucker awake and talking. The trucker doesn't remember what day it is, where he is or even that he was driving. He remembers his union number though.

Now it is out of our hands......I inform a police officer that I was behind the truck when it happened. Apparently there were few witnesses who actually pulled over. He asks me to wait around to fill out a report. I wait near the car where the woman is trapped. The fire fighters are prying the car open and a few minutes later, they're pulling her out. She's screaming. Screaming in pain. Screaming because she's scared. Screaming because she just woke up and perhaps what she thought was a terrible nightmare is actually very real. She's probably broken in several places. I turn to Owen and assure us both that even though the screaming is hard to hear, it's a good sign.

We arrive in Olympia. About an hour goes by and all of a sudden I'm coming back into my body in the middle of my friends' music gig. I was staring wide eyed at nothing and spacing out for minutes at a time. All of the images kept racing through my head. I thought about how terrifying it must have been for the Northbound lanes to see a big truck bust out in the wrong direction at 60mph right into oncoming traffic. I started to see things from the point of view of the woman in the car. I freaked out, quietly, for a good couple of hours.

I'm back home now....finally able to process a little now that I'm alone. These images are going to be with me for a long time to come. They still seem very plastic. I felt like I needed to write it down and share it so that I wouldn't forget.....and to somehow prove just how real it was. I want to know that both drivers are OK, but I never will. One good thing in this situation is that I couldn't have asked for better passengers to work alongside through this. We calmly took care of all that could possibly have been taken care of in the time between the crash and the ambulance. Neither of the drivers will ever know about us though...and we'll never know about them. I am glad that it wasn't any worse than it turned out to be. Not to say it wasn't a terrible real-life nightmare. It's amazing....the luck, that is. There happened to be big gaps in traffic in both directions in those few seconds, there was great potential for more victims to have been involved and there were a couple of people who were lucky that they weren't dead on impact.

Here's to wishing them both a full recovery. Full physically and as full an internal recovery as one can get after experiencing an unwanted and painful glimpse at death.</div>

<div>this perhaps may be a little too much info (TMI) but what the hell.....it's my fuckin' journal, right? heh.
i went to a rope bondage class last night and it was pretty great. i would definitely go again, although there wasn't much said that i didn't already know, as far as common sense and safety goes, but it's always good to re-visit stuff like that, especially if there are people there who don't often think about those issues. as for the hands-on portion, it was sort of like learning the building blocks of something that you could continue to self-educate yourself about. the take-home handouts could be better explained, both vocabulary and the visuals. my whiney, technical, knit-picky side kinda wished that they'd had enough couches for everybody to get comfortable, because most folks were sitting in rigid chairs set up in rows for 3 hours.

i've always really liked learning how to tie knots, and well, it sure is nice to know how to tie people up all purdy-like with 'em.</div>

birthday and shows....

<div>Two things.
First, thank you to everybody that came to my
surprise birthday party last Thursday. Since it was
a surprise, invites were beyond my control and I
wish all of you could have been there to see the
look on my face when I came through the door.

Second, my performance troupe has a bunch of
shows coming up and I'd love to see you all
at 'em. See our website www.primaryelement.org
for all the info you need. I strongly recommend our
performance at "the Ghost in the Machine" at
Consolidated Works on August 6th. There will
also be the option of paying $5 more to see a
brand new Burning Man documentary "Beyond
Black Rock", which is supposed to be amazing.
Good to see if you are at all interested in Burning
Man. For more info on that particular show, go to
www.theMach12e.org.

Hope to see all of you sometime soon...
