so I have gotten some compliments regarding my "husky" voice. adjective courtesy of Angi (sp.?) who I met last night. she seemed so happy in my presence I wondered what trick someone wanted to play on me (ha ha ha! er, no) and suggested that I get into voice over work. she makes music so perhaps we can collaborate but as you will have figured out by now, I think of doing things and tend not to do them.

tonight after I read some of Honest John (for the first time in forever and by the way I find reading stuff aloud a very useful exercise as far as knowing what to cut, revise, etc., clichéd but true) and someone said my voice sounded Patti Smith.

also tonight, at the open mike, talking with Brian:

me: "so the last time I saw you I had a mental breakdown and I tried to hide from you the best I could..."

short discussion as to the last time we had a conversation. I remembered, he didn't. (

him: "a magical breakdown?"

me: "uh, you could say that. that sounds pretty good actually. no, a mental breakdown."

earlier today I gave a homeless woman a dollar. I had never seen her before. she had tears in her eyes.

a man sidled up and said something to the effect of I gave her a dollar maybe she would use it to buy drink and that she might die because of it. which he said he thought of as a good thing.

"I wish everyone had your compassion," I said.

he told me that a preacher had said that to him. he had not picked up on my irony.

"he sounds like a great man."

the man said that he (the preacher) would never let anyone call him great because "only Jesus was great" or words to that effect. once again he did not pick up on the irony of my last statement which I had only said to please myself, anyway, like my other uses of irony.

"I don't think there'd be a lot of danger of me calling him great."

"right, because he wouldn't let you."

a third time the irony went right by him. a few minutes later I thought I had seen him again and then realized I could not remember his face even minutes later. other than his age and his hair (shaved off almost to the skin) and that he had on a jacket and hoody, I could not think what he looked like.

again and again I come across the message that we must treat all religions with respect. last month I read through most of (before I gave it back to the library) Peace Pilgrim: Her Life and Work In Her Own Words and she said as much, too. and I really respect Peace Pilgrim . [info]exoterica  just recently forwarded on something to that effect.

I have more respect for religious texts when i don't read them. when I don't read them I can pretend that they all contain truth and all say the same things and just leave it that. when I do read through them, I see how much they get wrong. if you look for tolerance and pluralism you will find it in the Koran, but only in places, or in the Bible, but only in places.

no one says respect all political ideologies as equal. let's lump in all the political philosophies. the personality cult of Lydon LaRouche will get along with the personality cult of Kim Jong-il, the Republcan Party will find common ground with the Irish Republican Army.

religions contradict each other. also, some have more merit than others.

spiritual maturity can make it more difficult for a person to recognize that other people lack that maturity. the childish, moralistic passages in the religious texts mean exactly what you wouldn't want them to mean. or so I think, anyway.
