Joy as a Second Language

It's morning, Thursday morning, to be exact, and we're getting ready for our town day. We pack a lot into this trek out of our remote desert and into the scruffy Nevada town where we shop and visit with our friends.

Sam is generally indifferent to Going Places, except when it involves getting to see his friend Diane, whom he loves with abandon. On Thursday mornings she plays with him and gives him juice and kisses and cookies while I go to my Al-Anon meeting. And for this I love her, too.

Sam is sitting next to me on the couch talking about his upcoming birthday party. He has received a gift in the mail with brightly colored wrapping paper and this has him thinking and thinking about this birthday thing.

"Party," he says.

"Yes, we're having a party to celebrate your day," I answer.

"Crown," he pats the top of his head.

"Yes, you will wear a crown and be prince."

"Cake?"

"Yes, there will be cake."

Been absent from the blogosphere lately because I've been obsessed with the fairies, have had wonderful company, and because in the past two weeks Sam has discovered blocks and puzzles and we have been having the best time with both. The universe has just opened up and poured these gifts over us.

Last week at Trevor's we found the most perfect chunky wooden animal puzzle with a story book attached with more places to put the puzzle pieces. It was so very fine that we sat right down on the... read more

There, in between the shadow and the light, just under the sweeping branch of the salt cedar, is Samuel, coming down the coyote path through the mesquite thicket and out into the hideout we've created for him, down at the edge of the wash under the arching bows of a tree.
