The Playa Bekons

Yesterday in an effort to take a much-needed break from the last month’s hectic schedule, Tink and I decided to embark on an exploration in a day-trip to the playa. We wanted to see about approaching the Gerlach and the playa from the west, and perhaps check out the scenery less traveled. It was a fantastic day!!

Accompanied by Sophie, our intrepid K9, we entered new territory as we turned off onto BLM Route 26020, otherwise known as the Smoke Creek Ranch/Gerlach Road. It was gorgeous, narrow, well tended gravel road that wound its way through the mountain range, through pretty awesome ranchland, coming out ultimately just west of Gerlach. We headed out onto the open playa heading east and made our way over to Trego Hotsprings, before heading south along High Road skirting the Selenite Mountains; back into Gerlach where we stopped in at the BRC headquarters, to say hello and stretch our legs.

Heading back home, we again avoided the traditional route and instead took the scenic cow-trails down along to the western shores of Pyramid Lake and up and over via Lemmon Valley before pulling back into the ranch. It was terrific getaway!

It was Perfect! Great sun, light winds, and ideal... 'cept maybe for the family of 4 who showed up at the hotsprings with lawnchairs and rifles specting to do a little target practice on an old barrel. kinda took the *peace* out of peaceful.
