I am currently striving to buy this way: Either used/recylced items or if they are new they are made of sustainable materials or from recycled materials.....for example, clothing: I buy from the trift store or I buy new items such as orgainc cotton t-shirts, hemp shoes, etc etc

Well, I have several bookmarks I'd be glad to share with you and personal knowledge of shops in and around L.A. that carry these types of items. Just ask me. I get nothing but satisfaction by sharing what I've found. Hey, and you can always wear recycled clothing from thrift stores.
