10 MLK Jr. Quotes: It's a long walk to the river...

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. inspired a nation to change largely through his riveting speeches. Considered one of the greatest orators in United States history, his thoughts on racial equality have been repeated by many speakers throughout the years since his assassination. His skill with words powered King's nonviolent battle for integration and equal rights.
Here are 10 quotations from the eminently quotable activist.

1. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.
-- "Stride Toward Freedom," 1958.

2. The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
-- "Strength to Love," 1963.

3. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
-- "Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963.

4. Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.
-- "Strength to Love," 1963.

5. Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor.
-- "Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963.

6. The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
-- "Strength to Love," 1963.

7. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue.
-- "Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963.

8. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
-- "I Have a Dream," civil rights march on Washington, D.C., August 28, 1963.

9. Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon. It is a weapon unique in history, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.
-- "Why We Can't Wait," 1964.

10. The security we profess to seek in foreign adventures we will lose in our decaying cities.
-- [Referring to U.S. Vietnam policy.] Address at Riverside Church, New York.

I need a roommate!

That's right! I'm looking for a roommate to share my two bedroom, two bathroom, two car tandem-parking apartment in Hollywood (Franklin Village) near Beachwood Canyon, Birds, La Poubelle, Bourgeois Pig, Tamarind Theater and Mayfair Market.

Lots of amenities including gym, jacuzzi and pool. Utilities included: $750.

No smoking, no pets, no parties... looking for a low key, quiet, tidy, responsible, respectful and trusting person who can pay their bills on time and understand that I work crazy hours and my apartment is my place to decompress and chill.

Let me know if you're interested.

The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I’m not so sure these days
Of everything I might have said
There’s a picture in my mind
Of how it should have been instead.

I can’t believe sometimes
How I dwell on all I do
It’s not so easy now
To tie-up things that we undo.

I sensed you near to me
I can’t explain the things I feel
It wasn’t you again
The similitude appeared surreal.

Is there joy in letting go
When it out-weighs what you catch?
It seems so sad to watch
Unhook the line and throw it back.

Is that you at the corner?
Is that you at the traffic light?
Every car looks like your car, tonight.

Today marks the 5th anniversary of my mothers passing. She was the most incredible person I've ever known. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about her. Growing up, you could not have known me without knowing my mom. She was everyone's mother. The person you would talk to first if something went wrong. When I was a kid, friends would call me at home and spend an hour talking to my mom before they'd talk to me. She had the uncanny ability to make you feel special and loved... that you could do anything if you put your heart into it. She is missed by many. On this day, instead of being sad, I just feel blessed that I had the honor of being Barbara's son. Her headstone reads: An amazing woman and a friend to all. That pretty much sums it up.

Ingmar Bergman RIP

I cannot tell you how much I loved this man's work. Passionate, controversial, masterful and way ahead of his time. A pure and simple genius. His films were like old friends that helped me get through life's rough patches. You will not find better cinematic examples that examine the human spirit as deftly as Bergman. Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. WS.

Ingmar Bergman dead at 89, picture of course from his film The Seventh Seal.
