Since fall I had more time for buddhist practice again. And not only practice, also participating in courses and meetings. I enjoyed being with the Sangha, learning from skilled teachers, and having fun combining development with social interactions. Lately, I attended the "Christmas course" in Copenhagen. It was a small event with only 200-300 participants. But most of them from Denmark and Northern Germany, which meant meeting great friends again.

I don't do much about New Year's resolutions, but I think in 2009, I will be prioritizing Buddhism over medieval re-enactment.

End of a season.. sort of

A great concert was the closing act for this medieval season.

We attended Spectaculum in Hamburg - actually it was more of a visit than a participation. The weatherforecast was so bad, so we decided to go there only as visitors. But it wasn't all this bad. Even better, the ambience was great. Spectaculum is more sort of a fantasy festival than a medieval fair, but if one doesn't go there expecting authentic re-enactment, it's a fun place to go.

The concert saturday night was with Faun [1] and Schelmish [2]. Two great medieval folk/rock orchestras, who do fantastic life perfomances. While I had seen Schelmish on different occasions before, Faun was new to me. Their style is more calm, melodious but even tantalizing in their own way.

Maybe there will be another short medieval gathering in the town of Ribe mid-october. But the summer fairs are definitely over for this year. Sad somehow, huh?

Respectable re-enacting and jugglery

The medieval center in Nykøbing F. [1] arranged a marked with workshops for participants/re-enactors. I was quite curious about how this combination would be. And it was absolutely pleasing. The center really did a great job on infrastructures, information, and all the social aspects. There was a very good and constructive atmosphere, since all re-enactors really were keen to learn and improve themselves. The workshops gave a nice break from re-enacting and offered from forging, sewing, and leather craft to music, dance, and speeches about arts and cultural topics.

A week later, I visited The Spectaculum [2], a German historical fair, which is held on different locations. The Spectaculum isn't really a medieval market - at least among the visitors were a lot of renaissance people, vikings, pirates, and goths. While the atmosphere was completely different from the one in Nykøbing F. it was equally relaxed and cheerful. There were som great bands playing, and people enjoyed the gathering, which basically is a rather commercialized market after all.

Oh, and I experienced a medieval hot tub - right at the center of the market place, next to one of the stages. A lovely treat for the unbashful!

Non-english poly books

Exactly one year after we attended the conference about Polyamory and Mono-Normativity in Hamburg ( http://people.tribe.net/gorkon/blog/b724ccdf-afbf-4336-95d0-9c487cd93034 ) I visited the town at the Elbe again. This time, it was for a reading of a recently published book ( http://www.ein-fruehstueck-zu-dritt.de ) with first-hand reports about different polyamorous relationships.

Although I've read some of the book in advance, it was amazing to hear the people behind the texts reading their own story. It was also extremely nice to meet some of the lovely folks from the german-language poly mailing list again.

As far as I know, "Ein Frühstück zu Dritt" (Breakfast for three) is the first german-language book about the topic. Although many continental Europeans speak or at least understand English, I think it's important to have that kind of litterature accessible in other languages as well. Not only translated or adapted, but really written from scratch.

Now, the Danish audience is much smaller than the german-speaking, of course. But I think it would be worth the effort writing a Danish poly book. So stay tuned...

How it was done

Upon request a few hints on my kilt: I was inspired by the pattern at http://www.scottishdance.net/highland/MakingKilt.html But obviously, the pattern had to be much more simplified for working with leather. So I first made 6 pleats on the back. Then I attached the double-sided waist band - with nitted loops for the belt. Finally, I attached the belt on the inner apron, made a slit to lead the belt out and around the back. On the front apron, the belt is strapped to a buckle. Like this, the kilt is adjustable to my ever changing width.

I'm currently sewing a leather kilt. It's almost done, but I'm missing yet the belt and some other small parts, which I will receive next week. Actually the package was being delivered yesterday, but it was charged forward, and we hadn't enough cash in the house, so I couldn't have it handed out.

Meanwhile, the sporran just got finished.

First EBM/Industrial concert in years

Yesterday, my wife and I went out to hear Das Ich, The Invincible Spirit, and PTYL in Flensburg. It was our first EBM/Industrial concert, well actually the first live gig at all, since we've got kids.

What can I say other than: Voll geil! The music was great. There was a fourth band to start the evening, but they were almost done, when we got there. PTYL was up next. Their cross-over between EBM and electro punk was pretty catching. The Invincible Spirit was really great. Their EBM-style is great to dance to. And the old but ever so great hit "Push" got the audience started for good. The highlight of the evening was Das Ich. They had a great stage show, and their music style has undergone an interesting development. Personally, I found it less danceable, but very gripping and intriguing.

I really enjoyed the concert and the comfy ambience of the Roxy Club. It was bit cold in the beginning, though. But after some dancing and jumping it got much better. The audience was great, too. Not too crowded but a comfy blend of goths, hard core EBM-people, and just regular folks of all different ages.

If you're a European tribe-member and interested in the concept of polyamory, drop in and say hi. If you've not yet joined tribe.net, sign up now. It's a great community, but so far not too well known in Europe.

Today, I finally had my tatto done. The first pic is in my album. It's all still a bit red at itching, but not as bad as I feared. I'm really happy with it, and I'm proud that I designed the motive myself - well with a bit of inspiration from Frankling Veaux. And yes, it's the logo from our danish polyamory site.

Update: I've just put another picture of my tattoo in the album. After a couple of days, it's even more beautiful.

Just returned from a Poly Conference taking place in Hamburg. Polyamory and Mono-Normativity. Very academic, yet very fun, too. It was the first poly event my wife and I attended, and we met a lot of people from a german-language poly mailing list, we're subscribing to. Lots of talking, laughing and hugging.

One of the conference's high-lights was a workshop on jealousy by Dossie Easton. She's great and we learned and got aware of so many things. But also some of the lectures were really great and interesting.

So it definitely was a great weekend!
