Maglev
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 7:54 PMThe Maglev, named because it operates by electromagnetic force, accelerates so quickly and goes so fast that it feels like you are in an airplane about to takeoff or perhaps an amusement park ride. It, in fact, accelerates so quickly that after we boarded I was beginning to wonder if perhaps I should be wearing some kind of seatbelt or harness around my shoulders like on a roller coaster in case there is some kind of collision or the train needs to make an abrupt stop. These questions didn't stop as we approached a speed of 200 km/hr, then 300, then 350, and 400. I was starting to get a little uncomfortable and was thinking "Thank god I didn't have to be the first person to ride this train" because even after knowing that it's been operating without a hitch since 2004, going at such fast speeds on a train feels so abnormal. The top speed we reached was 431 km/hr, which was maintained for a while, but since it's going that fast it's not long before it has to decelerate and stop because we reached the destination. After the ride was over all of the tourists clamored by the Maglev for a photo next to the world's fastest train. And all I could think was of how I wanted to ride it again and again forgetting that it was merely supposed to be a method of transporting me from the airport to the city.
As I rode the BART to work from the airport yesterday, I was noticing myself being highly critical of it and, in general, all US mass transit. Why don't we have any super cool levitating trains that are propelled by magnets?

fast train
Christina I am so glad you wrote these comments about this very fast train ride. Do you remember when we rode the train between London and Paris and then back again and we thought is was so cool to be going 270 k in Northern France? This train sounds like it is a notch up from that. How amazing and that it has been so accident free for four years. I can't wait to ride this train when I go there. Was it expensive?
I also believe that German technology was involved in the creation of the train and that it is being carefully watched by other countries. I'm sure it won't be long before someone else will have a train like this. I do remember reading about it and hearing that is was very expensive to build. Thanks again for writing about this marvel. your mom |

Hi Mum!
I'm glad you enjoyed the comments! You're absolutely right, German engineering was behind the creation of this train and I really do hope that other cities/countries will follow suit and build similar super-high speed trains. Haha! I clearly remember riding through the Chunnel from London to Paris, but funny enough, that being my first trip to Europe everything seemed so novel and new...thus I don't distinctly remember being so amazed by the speed of it, but perhaps that's just because it was soooo long ago and it's faded from my memory :) It actually wasn't so costly to ride, roughly $7.14 (depending on the exchange rate.) However, as you mentioned, it was incredibly costly to build and, from what I understand, they aren't seeing enough ridership to offset the cost to build it, unfortunately. |
