I was watching this 60 minutes piece on elephants and how they have long memories, which isn't great if you're a baby elephant and your mother is killed by poachers.

When we see animal compassion -- elephants mourning the dead or gorilla's picking up hurt children -- we think of them as having human characteristics instead of thinking that compassion is in fact an animal characteristic. Odd, that.

British Airways lost an entire carton of tissues.

Ben Byer died today.
37 years old.

Our families friends...
We born months apart.
Our mothers pregnant together.

Our older brothers fought over who would be cops, who would be robbers. My brother loved guns. His was a pacifist.

My brother grew up to be a rabbi. His a marine.

Ben was diagnosed with ALS in 2002. He survived longer than most. He was making huge strides with science. He was getting an experimental pacemaker put into his lungs. He died in the night.
