Toolsets

   Thu, March 3, 2005 - 7:53 PM
Ron just posted a comment on my last post about how Tribe really needs to focus on creating toolsets for users.

I think that is a really interesting position to take and one that many of the folks that I talk to think about. For example Marc Canter is a huge advocate of toolsets. Of empowering users by giving them the tools to create and express and then getting out of the way.

One question that comes up is what are the toolsets that our users would want? Another that immediately springs to mind is how does that benefit the company? Can Tribe survive as being an open tools company? What are the other companies out there that do this?

the people are the tools.. um.. wait a second.
re: getting out of the way
i think its important to watch how users use your tools.. then teach others some simple "best practices" or "starting points" based on what you learn.

re: can tribe survive at being an open tools company?
I think that tribe's strength is the people.
Functionality is good when it does the following (in order of significance)
1) helps your user(s) achieve X better, faster, cheaper, more enjoyably (is that a word?)
2) gives your site a "cool" factor for the next Y months
3) makes life easier for someone on your team

when i think of tribe i want to think of the people first.. and secondly, that as a platform, tribe always has the newest and best tools - not the other way around.
