Cognitive Dissonance is Inertia's Enabler

So out of the six days that I worked at the nameless PR firm in Alameda, I always had a great attitude, and an open and optimistic mind. One by one, events would unfold that would rub me the wrong way, but consistently I thought "I made the decision to accept this job and I am always right. Therefore I AM liking this job, I MUST be, and any perceived problems will go away once I get inside their inner circle." I was desperately trying to convince myself that this was the right choice. This is called Cognitive Dissonance.

But as much as I was telling myself that it would soon be more copasetic, the little man inside me knew better. You can't fool the Little Man. And all this and last week, he was quotingArrested Development: 'I've made a huge mistake.'

I would like to outline why this was not the right job for me, but the first rule about blogs is you've gotta keep them short. The second rule is, start writing a series. So that's what I will do (now that I have so much free time) for the next week. Everyday this week I will describe another reason why I'm glad that I was freed from my self inflicted prision of Cognitive Dissonance with bars of steel-Inertia. After this week, I will chart my progress down the path of the unemployed, along with the undoubted twists and turns. And everyday I will leave you, my readers, with a wise nugget.

Today's nugget: When you get a gut feeling about something, don't take a Tums; you gotta go with the Little Man.

P.S. I've started a new blog for this endeavor: http://zappasaiditbest.blogspot.com/ or Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station, and will not be posting any more work related entries on my myspace or tribe blogs. Add my new blog to your RSS feed! http://zappasaiditbest.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

So I just got this sweeeeeet 2001 SV 650S that looks like it's brand new. I just need to get a new front tire and have the carb re-jetted, but what I really need is a new name for the bike. My last SV was called the Last Dragon (RIP), so how do you follow that? The Lastest Dragon? Take a look, and give me some ideas. The winner gets something shiny.

I emailed NBC about a month ago about getting tickets to see Conan when he's in SF. They didn't respond, so I just figured I was too late. Then, today, blamo! I get an email from Uncle Conesy, telling me I have 2 tickets reserved.

Now the only question... who do I take?

So I was just down in the OC visiting my grandma and I found some old pictures of me. One was my 2nd or 3rd grade class picture, complete with a Max Headroom t-shirt. The others are pictures from me at an event in 1986. What event you ask? Hands Across America. I've been telling people for years that I was a part of the chain, and now I finally have proof. So as soon as I scan them, I will post them on tribe http://people.tribe.net/colonel , and myspace http://www.myspace.com/coloneltcb
It may take a while, but I'll get em up there.

So literally for years now, I have been hounded by various friends of mine to join Myspace/Friendster/Tribe etc. Initially my excuse was that I didn't have a computer at home, and if I knew it would be the type of thing I would be addicted to. So for the sake of keeping my job, I put it off. Then, when I got a laptop, I decided to join up. I joined Tribe and Friendster, hated Friendster and stuck with Tribe. Back then, Tribe had no ads, and tons of nudity that the hedonist in me just couldn't say no to. I never actually joined Myspace, but I didn't like the layout, didn't like the fact that it was just a bunch of 15 year-olds looking to land someone like me in Pelican Bay. My excuse when friends asked me to join Myspace was always the same, "Tribe is better." But now, Tribe has changed so much that I don't know if that's still true. I still think Tribe has a better lay-out than Myspace, but Myspace just has more people. Yes, they have more lame people, but the same is true about cool ones. So I won't be ditching Tribe, I just joined Mypace in addition. So any of y'all on Myspace can look me up as... who else? ColonelTCB

Does anyone else have the new Neil Diamond album? I'm happy to tell you that it's worth getting. In fact, my new favorite Neil song is on this album, "Hell Yeah". I do have to say though that I'm a little sick of the "Produced-by-Rick Rubin-sound" cliché which is definitely present on this album. You know, the sound; the rich acoustic guitars with ultra-loud, front-and-center vocals and little or no percussion to speak of. And maybe throw in a slide guitar or accordion in some tracks.
Some of these songs are really powerful and would be even better with a traditional "rock" production (or at least a lousy drum-kit). Whatever, Rubin seems to have stumbled onto the formula for winning Grammys. The only problem is, winning a Grammy doesn't really speak much to the quality of a record.

So usually I have 49 friends, but today I find that my number has dropped to 48. Yet I have combed through my list and couldn't account for who's missing. I guess it was one of my fringe-unimportant friends, so if I can't even notice who dropped me, it really doesn't matter, but DAMN IT! I WANT TO KNOW WHO!
So I just got back from my interview with The Golden State Warriors. Let me set the scene. I get off the elevators and start walking down the long, blue-carpeted hallway known as the "Blue Mile" and the first person I see walking down this hall was Chris Mullin. "Good Morning," I said with a smile. "Hey, howya doin'?" he said, smiling back. Wow, that was pretty cool. Good way to start my interview. When I got into my interview, let's just say it went swimmingly. OK it was rawsome. They'll be in touch. Woot woot! Don't start calling me up asking for tickets just yet; this was only an interview for an internship position...get back to me in a couple years.
Oh by the way, The Warriors is showing at The Clay (see link) as a midnight movie tonight and tomorrow night. I'm going tonight. See you there.

OK, so maybe the idea of Burning Man was cool 20 years ago, but judging from which people I hear BM noise, now it seems like for every artist in the 'playa' there are 10 white guys with dreds and tribal tattoos around their arms. And then there's the weekend warriors. Ya know the lawyers (or other professional types) who can't stop talking about how they wait all year for that week of bad techno and E in the desert.
I don't hate these people, not at all, some of my friends go to Burning Man, and if that's their thing, cool. BUT JUST SHUT THE HELL UP! YOU'RE NOT GOING TO CONVINCE ME TO GO, SO SAVE IT FOR SOMEONE WHO LIKES TO HEAR STORIES ABOUT BAD TECHNO, DESERTS AND E!!!!!
