In Star Trek, the Klingons are always talking about how better it is to "die gloriously". After yesterday I think I have a good idea what they mean. My photo shoot yesterday was the most ambitious, difficult, foolhardy, physically challenging and ultimately rewarding as I am yet to do. The idea was to do a "Abstract Expressionism" theme featuring nude models. (Sort of Jackson Pollock meets Vagus.) When I tried to explain this idea to anyone, I usually got a "I'm too polite to tell you what a ...

1. Would you please give me a brief description of your career path so far? It has been like walking in the forest on Magic Mushrooms. 2. Please tell me about some of the harder lessons you learned as you were starting your career. Without a solid business plan, you career path will be like walking in the forest on Magic Mushrooms. 3. I have to admit, there are few things that people can do in Photoshop that can impress me. But every once in awhile it does happen. A friend sent me this link to a blog by a Photoshop Artist re-creating classic cartoon characters realistically. His Homer Simpson and Super Mario didn't really impress me but Jessica Rabbit just blew me away. I'm just amazed how he was able to get everything together so it looks both realistic and yet just like Jessica Rabbit. Here is the link to the blog page I...

Looking over my last ten pieces I see a pattern developing. At least 8 of the last 10 Pin-Up Illustrations is holding either some kind of gun, sword or knife. In one, she is holding Harry Potter's wand (which can double for a gun if you know the right spell). The tenth (Penny) is Sherlock Holmes and we all know that Watson always carried the gun for Holmes. I seem to be stuck drawing well armed women! I have to admit always being attracted to strong assertive women. But even I have to wonder ...

It seems that Congress is once again considering the Orphan Works act. This would change the existing copyright laws to expand what is to be considered an "orphaned work" . An orphaned work is a work of art where the copyright has lapsed because of either on purpose, because of the passage of time or lack of proper registration. It can then be used without your permission for any purpose. Up until now, this has been mostly work where because the artist has passed away and their estate has all...

Well Wolfgang Puck is a chef and a successful restaurateur. I don't really buy the idea that great artistic talent disqualifies you from having good business sense. Maybe creating art requires tapping into some deep mystic source of creativity, bu...

Business planning?
(in The Business of Art)
Color me curious. I see a lot of artist complain about how hard it is to make money with their art but I have to wonder how many of them have a real business plan to begin with? For the past couple of years I have been trying to put together a bus...

about me
I was born in San Francisco a few weeks before the Cuban Missile Crisis. (I wasn't yet a month old and already in a world of trouble! I was the second child of four kids and thought of by most of my family as the strange but quiet one. After a lackluster career in High School, I went off to Junior College and later enrolled in the Academy of Art College (now the Academy of Art University). While at the Academy, I earned a BFA degree in Illustration.
