My Boring Life
Week 1: Staying On Track
Sat, May 2, 2009 - 7:42 AMLast night I realized that I now have only 3 months before my first solo show in August and I have done jack to get ready for it. It's not that the last two months haven't been busy. They just been busy with the wrong things. Even now this post may be the only thing I get to do on this project today before I have to drop off a present to my friends, go see the dentist, have a musuem date with a woman I met last week and maybe go to a wizard's dance. Things just keep creeping into my schedule and it makes me crazy. I've decided to start posting my progress so I can keep track on what I should be doing.
The four major projects I have to complete in the next three months are...
• May 16th photo shoot
• July 18th photo shoot
• July 25th shoot
• August 12 Solo Show at the Citadel
The May 16th shoot is almost done as far as set up. I have the models, the make-up artist and the studio space lined up. I just have to email them the directions and times. Get the costume and props and make sure the ring light I want to use is there. All these little details is why I plan these shoots a month in advance. If everything holds together it should be fine.
The July 18th shoot is still in the early stages but I already have the models and the make-up artist lined up. Now I just have to find the live snake I need. There is also the matter of lights and costuming.
The July 25th shoot is where I am the model. I need to get my hair done and try to lose weight before this shoot. I'll have to touch base with Shelah in early July to get directions for me and Treja to her studio. I also have to get her a gift for shooting me and Treja's fee.
The August show at the Citadel still needs a lot of work. For starters I need to frame the photos that are going in. I was having my boss at work help me out with framing but it has been two weeks and I think it will be easier and cheaper just to get standard size frames and do it all myself. At least that will get half of the piece for the show taken care of. The other half I plan to output large banner size and just hang them frameless. Just make them huge! That seemed to be what the owner wants to see. It also works good for me so...
They don't want to handle sales. That is good since they don't want to take a commission. That is bad since why do a show if I an't make any money! I'll have to go with e-commerce. That way if someone sees something they like they can go to my web site and order it. Given that all my stuff is digital, I can do this kind of workflow. But that means I'll need a full blown e-commerce set up going and ready to rock before the show starts. That also includes shipping and order tracking. Lets not forget sales tax either.
Promotion and advertsing is last but not least. Who do I pimp myself to and how? Need to think on who my target market is more?
That's it for now. That should be eneough to keep me busy for the next week. While I was writing this I remembered that I need to take care of sales tax! How could I forget that! Got to go and work work work.
