Graduation
Wow, I hadn't seen that picture in a long time. I was on top of the world that knight. I can still remember the smell of the freshly cut grass on the football field permiating the air on that humid summer night in Tucson. As she was handing me my deploma, I was thinking "Sucker...". Good Lord, my grades were so bad in high school I never thought I'd graduate. In fact, I was on the "Not Graduating" list outside the principal's office. Seriously - they posted a computer print-out of all the seniors on the window of the Admin building. Those who weren't graduating had a big black marker line drawn through it. My name had such a line. If they ever make a movie about my life, I want that to be in the opening scene; A computer print-out with my name in it and seeing a faceless administrator's flabby arm drawing a big black marker smuge accross it. Story of my life. I spent two whole days in the counsellors office making credit substitutions like, "Well, you're missing a year of Phys-ed, but I guess you can substitute that for the two years of Mime class you took as a sophomore and a junior. What?! It's physical, it's educational, what more could you want?" So my pride that night wasn't necessarily as "Norman Rockwell" as you may be thinking. No sir, I was smug with arrogance and superiority because I had successfully played the system. Or maybe I was the one that got played. I don't know. This year is my 20-year reunion. Oh, and I also remember thinking how terrible that woman's skirt was. Okay, not really. But it's fun to imagine myself being way cooler than I actually was. Sometimes, you can remeber things just the way you want to. And if you get really good at it, you can actually change your life.
