i figured it out. i go thru the motions of opening reason, get the error prompt that it couldn't set up the controller, and so on... then at that point i just unplugged the controller from the usb port, wait a second, plug it back in to reset it...

i've tried multiple paths to opening reason in pro-tools. first i created a stereo audio track, selected instruments under plug -ins, selected reason... the other atempt was to open a stereo aux track, open reason under it by selecting reason under instrument plug-ins, and routing that aux track to a stereo audio track through buses 1 and 2.
