about me
My career is in clinical laboratory science and I work at UVA Med Center in the Molecular Diagnostics Lab.
Although my career is in science, I have always been involved in the arts...both music and dance. I play the piano and have studied ballet and jazz starting at age 13. About six years ago, I took my first bellydance class and have been hooked ever since.

Bellydance Superstars show
(blog entry)
It's been a long time since I've posted anything on tribe, because I'm not sure anyone ever logs on to tribe anymore. I haven't seen too many posts from friends lately and no announcements of events, so I may just be talking to the wind or the eth...

(blog entry)
Not long ago, I was watching a program on TV about groups of people around the world who are aging remarkably well. They are maintaining health and fitness well into their 90's, playing golf, working out, dancing, working outside in their yards. I...

Shareen El Safy
(blog entry)
At last...this weekend, for the first time, I actually "got it". What I mean is that I'm finally beginning to understand what it means to immerse yourself in the true classic Egyptian style. Shareen El Safy was an incredible teacher and a powerful...

Raqia Hassan
(blog entry)
I stand in awe of Raqia's dedication and commitment to preserving and teaching Raq Sharqi. She gives tirelessly and with such patience, and sometimes even while recovering from an injury as she was this weekend. This weekend's workshop in MD was ...

I haven't seen too many posts from friends lately and no announcements of events, so I may just be talking to the wind or the ethers. Where are events posted these days? Is there a different website or some e-mail list you should be on? Where, oh where did all the bellydancers go?

Not long ago, I was watching a program on TV about groups of people around the world who are aging remarkably well. They are maintaining health and fitness well into their 90's, playing golf, working out, dancing, working outside in their yards. I even saw one 106 year old lady who still cycled 6-7 mi every day on a stationary bike and also worked out with light weights! I was toatally impressed. It seems that their secrets, no matter where they live in the world, are a healthy diet low in pr...

At last...this weekend, for the first time, I actually "got it". What I mean is that I'm finally beginning to understand what it means to immerse yourself in the true classic Egyptian style. Shareen El Safy was an incredible teacher and a powerful woman. Just when I thought there can't be that many more ways of moving, boy did she prove me wrong with three pages of material. We started with the basics of how Egyptian dancers execute certain movements, which muscles they use and how they rele...

I stand in awe of Raqia's dedication and commitment to preserving and teaching Raq Sharqi. She gives tirelessly and with such patience, and sometimes even while recovering from an injury as she was this weekend. This weekend's workshop in MD was her first after her recovery from a foot/ankle injury and you could see that it still bothers her at times. She didn't make us work quite as hard as she did last year, and we took more frequent breaks. But despite that, we still covered three short c...

Wow!...Virginia (of Miami) is awesome! If you ever get the chance to take a class with her, I highly recommend it. Sometimes you come away from a workshop feeling like you maybe got one or two things out of it that you would actually use or practice. But Virginia's class was chock-full of new moves, combinations, traveling steps and transitions. She did teach a beautiful (and difficult) Egyptian Oriental choreography, but in the process we learned so many new combinations that I can use in my...
