about me
I'm a new graduate student in theoretical behavioral ecology & evolutionary biology. I am currently writing the first chapter of my M.S. thesis entitled, "Investigations of the Natural Selection & Spread of Altruistic Gene Loci."
And... my B.A. was cum laude in Political Theory, so as you can imagine, I love philosophy, particularly political philosophy. I have lots of interests that have next to nothing in common.
My greatest interest right now is in social evolution, how do genes for altruism originate and spread to fixation or become ESS's in a given population? How can they dominate an ecological niche? Why are some species highly social and others not at all? What are some mechanisms that allow sex-ratios to be skewed as Trivers-Willard theory predicts? These are some questions I hope to answer.

So here's my paper for GEO 6116: Perspectives on Environmental Thought. I think it makes for an interesting read, I hope the prof. does too! Just finished it. Enjoy!:

Behavioral Ecology and the De-Animalization of Nature
Introduction: the Problem of De-animalization
Beginning in the early 1960s, the work of behavioral ecologists (behavioral ecology is the study of ecosystems to understand how they should affect the behavior of individual organisms) took a turn toward mo...

The mid-21st century was a dark time in higher edutainment. For those of us lucky few who had achieved hypertenure in the Great GPU (Global Phoenix University), the years leading up to the Adjunct Robot Uprising were magical. Salaries were enormous, teaching duties had finally been eliminated, and one's research could be conveniently outsourced to Inter...

Introduction: Volcano Basics
In this section, basics about volcanoes and predicting when they might be more apt to erupt are be covered. Marti & Ernst (2005) includes an excellent discussion of volcano basics, some of which will be covered here. Most of the volcanic activity on Earth is located on the boundaries, ...

The juxtaposition of scenes of Art Garfunkel's character tearing up his unconscious ex-girlfriend (after cutting the hottie's clothes off with what appears to be a scalpel!) while she's in a pill-induced coma, along with scenes of her in convulsions receiving a tracheotomy in the E.R. an...

Fire ants are still one of my top fav. ant species. Solenopsis invicta is the killer of the ant world. These gals literally rip off their opponents' heads in battle and make belts out of them, much like the scalp outfits worn in some Native American tribes. One book detailed how the intrepid fire ants, were unable to enter the nest of rival woodland ants- Neoniger lasius- to eat the babies. So they built a seige engine made of dead fire ants and used it to storm the entrance of the lasius...
