Eric's Memorial Service

Today in San Francisco a huge turnout of hundreds attended Eric's memorial service; it overflowed the mortuary. The memorial was not a religious service, nor was it a "celebration of life" per se but rather a somewhat somber commemoration. After the formal setting and heartfelt addresses given at the funeral home many of the family and friends gathered at Eric's old high school nearby, which had kindly opened the cafeteria for a gathering with food, his favorite music playing, and his favorite brew: St. Pauli Girl beer.

It was good to reconnect with folks. I made sure his wife, daughter, and mom know we are sincere in wanting them to come spend time with us in Hawaii at our place whenever they want a break. A vacation on the Big Island every now and then should assist to ease things a bit, I hope, from time to time. Moreover, if Eric's daughter wants to attend the University of Hawaii Hilo when she reaches that age then we'll make sure she can do so.

Last night Eric's mom called and told me the police caught the guy who murdered him. SFPD told her it was 100% sure that they had the fellow. They must have compelling evidence to make such a strong assertion. It still all sucks, but at least this is now confirmed as a random act of an insane person rather than some vile gang-initiation or somesuch. Here is an article which came out today with the details:

Eric sure did make a difference for the better in so many people's lives. He will be missed.

So sorry you lost your best college bud. It seems you evidently got your schedule with your sister-in-law adjusted so that you could attend the service. I'm glad because it's good to have some closure. After years without a visit, I had a reunion this spring with my best college bud and his wife. I know for certain that if something happened to either one of those I'd be grief stricken. Our college friendship continued when, by amazing coincidence, they were stationed in Washington, DC the same time I was. I was able to live upstairs over them in Arlington. Our friendship grew richer and richer.

Hugs and warm wishes to you.

Thanks. Yes, my sort-of-sister-in-law (this is who she would be if my partner and I could go to city hall and get a marriage certificate from the clerk) understood the dilemma and urged me to fly to be here today instead of driving her and the zoo down the AlCan Highway. A friend is driving with her instead. Before I left she came over and I fitted thick planks of styrofoam in the back of the pickup truck bed --completely flooring the back with it-- so the dogs and cat have a warmly insulated floor beneath them on the week-long ride.

I forgot to note it before, but we all took some comfort from the fact Eric did not know what was occurring and did not suffer. A friend was helping him unload the camping gear and saw it all happen: the insane guy walked up and seemed to shove Eric in in chest as he turned around. Eric said "Hey!" and collapsed. It was just this quick. At least there is that.
