My grandfather was his seminary advisor, and my aunt and uncle lived in his Diocese when he was Bishop of New Jersey. Had nothing but positive things to say about him (my aunt, not my grandfather. He died before I was born.) I've met him at a book signing back in SC, and when he saw my last name, he mentioned my grandfather fondly. I daresay my grandfather wouldn't have thought much of Bishop Spong's beliefs, but I think he would have admired his tenacity, intelligence, and wit. I, of course, hold vastly different views than my grandfather, may he RIP. Bishop Spong is a good, brave man who makes me proud to be an Episcopalian.
