Zicam has been ordered off store shelves and is recommended to be disposed of from home medicine cabinets because it can cause permanent damage and complete loss to the sense of smell. Airborne was fined $30 million for falsely claiming the product prevents colds, though unlike Zicam it does not appear to do actual damage.

It's important to note that the Zicam warning was issued for its nasal applications and not for its oral applications. A judgment has not been made on those (yet).

My mom used to give me aspirin when I had a headache as a kid, too, and I lived to tell the tale, but a young friend of mine who had never taken an aspirin before took one and died. I've used Zicam with no apparent ill effects to my sense of smell, too, but I'd hate it if I gave some I had in my med cabinet to a kid and permanently zapped his or her sense of smell into nonexistence. Thus the mention here. |
