A French Story that Doesn't Suck

I just finished reading “Tokyo est mon jardin”. Art by Frédérique Boilet. It’s a excellent book and a technical feat. I had seen some of his work in “Japan: as viewed by 17 creators” and was really impressed. “Tokyo est mon jardin”is packed with beautiful panels. He delights in describing fine details. For instance, he captures the droopiness of a less than fresh t-shirt. Depictions of kanji calligraphy exhibition are awesome, handled with tender care; as is his depiction of the soft curves of a nude female body. His panels are jammed with interesting messes without being fussy and his textures and blocky compositions are really alive. His panels have the freshness of being hand-drawn. I kept asking myself how he pulled off an endless stream of sweet effects. Boilet blocks in midtones like a painter. Each new page has startling new effects. I can only dream of drawing like him.
