Tonight, the comet flicks
the sky, a white parrot's feather.
My world spins, and you re-
turn to your jaguar guise.
Cedar trees, spiced
with you, surround me.
Faint owl calls,
a distance of cars and coyotes.
Blue boreal--the sky indigo.
Stars glitter strangely.
Your whiskered face,
bleached by the moon.
Your breath too hot
for my numb face.
The road, poured metal,
washes glacial against my feet.
My eyes to the stars.
Your face in their outline.

Priestlike, they rise.
Their humming fills the world.
Their legs whisper.
Bee wolf, mud dauber--wasp.
This balcony vibrates with droning.
They veil the windows.
The brush of a thorax against a face.
Cedar through their wings.
Coneflower and shasta.
Bodies shiver with dryness.
Skin curls in the heat.
The air rattles with corpses.
Shells shatter like obsidian.
Wings, dry as husks.
Dust. Two empty mugs. The smell of wasps.

You were feline--long
muscles clenched as though one
breath would startle glass,
one blink would break
the water's calm, the fishes'
lazy laps. One touch
would send sharks, sunfish,
mantas, bass, blue-fin tuna,
salmon, sturgeon, barracuda
cascading down
with a floptwitchshudder--
plentitude of fish,
grand profusion of fish,
floor flooded with fish,
a burial in once-swimming fish,
and you,
hip-deep, teeth grinding, stunned.
You didn't move,
and the fish kept swimming.
