Recognize your Cages of Capability: ARE YOU A FREAK OR A GEEK?
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 4:55 AMMaybe this is my own personal trip more than a generality, but I don't think so. The following is only my opinion and coming from my personal experience:
After discovering that learning disabilities may not be permanent, I am realizing that learning disabilities may also not be what they seem.
From receiving Mind Region, I discovered first hand that the mind is distorted by influences in our unconscious mind and cause us to repeat behaviors that don't even originate within us. They start out as beneficial learning experiences and later become cumbersome and then later we call them "self sabotaging" or harmful.
From receiving Brain Integration Technique, I found myself realizing that I really didn't have access to my logical functions or short term memory. I was limited and I didn't want to admit it to anyone especially not myself. I learned to develop other abilities and become more functional that way. But after a short period of time my thinking has changed and I operate more logically while I still have excellent gestalt function (creative/intuitive). My little jaunt across the Corpus Callosum seems to be a pretty major deal from what I can observe so far.
ABOUT FREAKS AND GEEKS:
I have heard for years about how important it is to integrate the brain hemispheres. But only now do I understand better the cultural and socio-economic implications of this. You see while I believe that both sides are equally important in full expression of self, both sides don't get paid equally well in our American marketplace. This is about Geeks and Freaks! The Geek elite on average get paid more than the Freak elite.
It seams that only a small fraction of people have really maintained access to both the geek and freak sides of their brain equally. These people would be another category. Others are less severely to one side or another, for the sake of illustration lets look at the more one-sided folk.
The difference in pay between what the geeks in this town get paid and the freaks is Alarming.
Just look at the difference between what an average Microsoft/ tech geek makes and What an average Reiki master /massage therapist makes in a year and you will get the drift of what I am saying.
The Social part of the Socio-economic part is equally alarming. I notice that a great number of my friends who are artistically gifted healers, and who have great intuitive skills (The Freak elite) won't even go visit the east side of Seattle because the consciousness of the people there disturbs them or is uncomfortable to them. On the east side reside large numbers of the logical-dominant folk (The Geek Elite).
So there is some resistance from the freaks to experiencing the geeks. I have observed prejudice or discomfort on both sides.
From another point of view this is less about prejudice or judgment of others and more about self-judgment out of a revealed sense of inadequacy. In other words, maybe the freaks are freaked out that they are "too dumb" and feel judged by the geeks. Maybe the geeks feel "too stuck in their heads" to be as embodied, expressive and intuitive as the freaks and also feel judged. Maybe both sides feel massive intimidation from the skills (or the rationalizing wounded idealism) of the other side.
If this is true and if this is even a fraction as widespread as it appears to be. Then the implications of this are staggering. This is the formation of economic segregation! If we have people who cannot communicate freely due to discomfort this discourages free trade and collaboration. This creates a wider and wider economic and social divide over time. We create geek cliques and freak cliques that are also market places. Freaks become more apt to go to freaks and geeks to go to geeks to get their wares. In order to create economic prosperity we need to have a free flow of trade and communication across sides. As well as an increased valuation of gestalt type values: somatic values like wellness, health care and the environment. The We see some of this with some major geek corporations investing in Eco-friendly companies and appreciating art and holistic wellness. But there is a still a huge lack of understanding between sides perpetuated by the internal imbalance to only one side of the whole mind. Bottom line is that the slow paced changes that are occurring from the logic side of this is not enough and isn't addressing the core of the issue. The sides have to stop competing and start working together. This is also reflected in our Political landscape.
As a trend, again if the numbers are as big as they appear to be to me, then we have huge numbers of people who are forced to live in poverty due to not enough connection between brain hemispheres among other brain circuit limitations.
ARE YOU A GEEK OR A FREAK?
THE FREAKS CAGE OF CAPABILITY:
The Freaks, (being the less economically valued members of our still very colonized and post industrial consumer driven culture), are not supported enough financially to do what they do best much less have extra to invest in improving their relationships with the geeks. They are struggling and they will not be able to survive without working for geeks or being dependent on larger corporations.
This undermines what they are doing and builds resentment between sides since they can't seem to make ends meet on their own doing what they know to be a valuable service. While other countries have already solved much of this with socialized medicine and culturally embracing kinesthetic arts and modes of being as much as the logical arts. But we as a culture have failed to learn from them out of arrogance or inability to deam empathy equally important to industry as a means to greater prosperity and wellbeing.
This country has been valued as a technological engine for so long, that it seems that taking care of the self, the body or the land comes last. "First acquire, then develop the land into a "techopolis" to produce products, then if you have time smell the roses; ie. "I love nature, I just don't want to get any on me. " I've noticed that after Earth day is over pursuing empathy with people or nature is often still looked at as lazy, selfish, or even weak and pointless due to a lack of ability for some to experience empathy or other Freak sensibilities. And of course you may have to choose between feeding your kids and taking care of yourself, much less communing with nature or developing your empathy and embodiment skills!
The Freaks having tried and failed to succeed at working within the system, turn to other options outside the system, such as either numbing themselves with drugs and phamaceuticals prescribed or not and Legal or not. They often are seeking to reconnect to their full brain function or numb the awareness of their frustration that usually turns into a fog of Apathy. Also lacking the technical skills to run a legitimate business being limited to only creative skill sets, these Freaks also distrust others who may possess the skills they lack to help them, because they are uncomfortable with those skillsets and are reminded of their "stupidity". Frustrated on all fronts, with heightened emotions they sometimes turn to illegal forms of activities to make ends meet. Permanent poverty and low self-esteem and instability plague them until they receive mental healing or go insane or into dementia and Fog because they cannot "get organized enough to succeed."
THE GEEKS CAGE OF CAPABILITY:
With disproportionate value being placed on logic function geeks on average can make ends meet better than the freaks, but they often lack social skills and the empathy to enjoy their gains. They may find some balancing by spending time in nature, but they may not be able to express what they really feel or show vulnerability to those they love or be able to sense what their partner or family member is feeling. This tears the family apart and undermines the wellbeing of everyone involved and shortens the life expectancy of committed relationships. Their partners are forced out of starvation for emotional connection and empathy to seek this elsewhere. They also are less connected to their bodies and so health problems are more likely to materialize more quickly in geeks. Especially heart issues. Sensing the vitality and embodiment of the freaks yet not knowing how to attain it, they remain frustrated feeling isolated from what they love but cannot figure out how to become what they love or how to keep others who are embodied happy enough to stick around.
Acting out, they feel more entitled to find ways to get success at any cost because they cannot "feel fulfilled".
BUST OUT OF YOUR CAGE SOLUTIONS:
Social Togetherness:
People seem baffled as to why the other side is so "stupid" or "Out of touch" in the politics at large or the relationships they encounter. But we are segregating ourselves and creating and enforcing this divide by not working together to solve the internal problem. We need to balance our internal sense of value for both our Geek and Freak attributes. We need to forgive ourselves and others and accept them where they are so that we can stop perpetuating the competition and segregation. We need to celebrate together and get to know our neighbors and find ways to really get to know people who are not like us. If we get together and socialize with others it becomes easier to empathize with others. We need to continue to value logic and increase our valuing of the Freaky intuitive and kinesthetic side.
Mental Togetherness:
Kabbalah-
This is a problem that Kabbalists knew about that can be understood and balanced with the connection between the sepheroth Hod and Netzach. Hod and Netzach are Logic and Emotional Aspects of Mind. The Universal Kabbalah helps people reconnect these aspects through experiential meditations and attunments called "ascentions". In the Level II class of the The kabbalah called pathworking the path called the Tower is a direct connection to this very issue.
All our abilities to succeed are really related to this balancing of these two aspects and if they aren't balanced then we aren't ready to succeed yet. Our foundation of basic belief isn't whole and strong yet.
Mind region- Brain Integration Technique- and Gem Therapy-. and Ecstatic Dance
Gem Therapy in fact, increases gestalt-empathic-emotional-intuitive-functioning. It takes these skills to a real Meta-level of operation.
Mind Region And Brain Integration Technique are good for nearly everyone. The benefits of BIT are more clear if you are more obviously
limited with brain function in some way. For me it has been profound. Mind region really cleans up the self sabotage that makes it easier to make head way with the other work. Ecstatic Dance is another embodiment tool that works really well.
May our minds be whole complete and fully functional! May our hearts be open! May we outgrow our cages with a deep sense of divine union and connection to natural intelligence!

false dichotomy in many cases
Daenin,
With all due respect, I think you are making some gross generalizations, here. I have lived amongst a community of artists, musicians, actors, activists, and healers who since college 15 years ago have, for one reason or another migrated into the tech industry since BECAUSE their creativity was tapped by that work in some way and they needed to make a living. Geeks come in all stripes. My ex was in a punk band when I met him, had hair to his waist, was and has remained a devoted student of literature and philosophy, and taught high school for several years before he became a programmer, a field in which he learned to apply his brilliant and creative mind to buidling web applications, which he enjoys. He is a highly kinesthetic person in many regards, and is an excellent organic gardener who cares greatly about holistic health and wellness. His emotional capacity is governed by other forces. I know a wide array of very kinesthetic, creative, "freaky" geeks. I also know "freaks", as you call them, of all stripes. A lot of the "freaks" I know are as well-educated as the "geeks", but made different choices, had different priorities along the way. I also know many "freaks" who are very successful career-wise and employ their creativity to very abundant ends. I know others who long for radical change of our economy, are choosing to "drop out" of mainstream culture, and are willing to live lifestyles that reflect their value systems. I often see the folks you are categorizing as freaks and geeks fraternizing quite contentedly at many social events in this community. We are all mosaics of different experiences and backgrounds, skills and abilities. We are all representative of very likely many different and possibly seemingly conflicting subcultures in this culture simultaneously. particularly if we still identify at all with our natal families. |

Yes, yes I Agree
Yes, yes I Agree!
Mosaic truly. And I believe this is a matter of degrees and different proportions and mixtures. Some people are more balanced but miss a certain element of the freak nature or vise versa. I bring these up not to make gross generalizations for profiling purposes but rather to bring up awareness of two sides of our nature. Just to make this a bit more interesting... I believe a similar debate could occur with gender issues. |
