THE TRUTH IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK HAPPENED

Rule number 1 - don't kill monks

First Burma, now China...

Bad news.

I've been wondering when America is going to get the karmic kickback for crimes against nature....

I've got water and food. And medical supplies. And tarps and zip ties.

On a lighter note, I spent all day yesterday at Kabuki Hot Springs. I can recommend a massage therapist named Yoko. Since Marley left there, I was never sure who to recommend to people. She's very good. And stay in the sauna for as long as possible. And do hot/cold/hot as many times as you can in the pools. It's like drugs.

At least when the apocalypse comes, I'll be relaxed.

Well, Jennifer, according to your logic it sounds like payback has already happened- it was called Hurricane Katrina.

Certainly fits the pattern you suggest, what with thousands of innocent people being punished for the crimes of their government.

Of course, you might have to debate John Hagee about that one - he claims Katrina was punishment for the fact that New Orleans is a den of sin and the hurricane was a premptive strike against a big gay pride parade that was scheduled to happen soon after Katrina hit.

Seriously, is there any difference between claiming one natural disaster is a result of karma and another is God's wrath on sinners?

One has to admit that the tornados that are ripping apart the US heartland are pretty impressive...

I do think it oddly "coincidental" that the earthquake in China hit so close to Tibet, and as for BURMA (I will NOT call it Myanmar) - where to begin?

Maybe there's something to this Gaia nonsense after all?

Okay ... I'm going out on the wacko branch here, so buckle up - it may be a bumpy ride.

I believe that there is some level of consciousness in all things. Not just energy, not just spirit. Now, my consciousness isn't everyone or everthing's consciousness and so too the reverse. Each has its own uniqueness.

That said, it should come as no surprise that I argue for conscious action on the part of the Earth and the Weather over karma or retribution. Perhaps this comes from a belief that something as complex as the planet has survived this long by being proactive rather than reactive. To be proactive takes decision, thus my belief that there is consciousness involved.

This does not discount the karmic kickback theory (I never shoot down other's ideas willfully as there is a 50/50 chance I'm wrong.)

I'm with Thalassa: don't get me started on Tibet and Burma - my Inner Buddha will go on holiday without me again and I really need a vacation.

When you meet your inner Buddha on the road, kill him

National karma
I personally do believe in a form of national karma, and that is just like the religious right saying NOLA brought their own trauma upon themselves... except karma is far trickier than that... and less personal that a judging God.

I suspect that most people don't like that idea because it opens the door for some form of suffering to afflict them or the people they love because of someone else's actions. But that doesn't give any greater comfort than the randomness argument - when tragedy can hit for no reason at all. I'd rather know that my suffering is balancing some greater injustice and paving the way for less suffering later.

yes..i would hope my suffering or the suffering of others was balanced in some way...we will never truly know for sure...that is the beauty of spiritualism..everyone has an angle...
as far as the millions of folks out there just tryin' to live in the chaos of others, i can only hope they find some peace in the next turn. whether that be corporal or not.
according to some there is no accident in this life..that our spirits choose our paths before entering our forms...that they can choose the level of difficulty (so to speak) to help speed up or slow down our "development"...the harder the lessons the more learned is the gist's i suppose....

Karma operates with an elegance beyond human agency. The Wheels spin and we can only roll with them - we can never know the whole picture, and control is an illusion. I was especially struck by that on September 11. One of the hardest things for humans is to realise that it's not just about them, either individually or collectively
