Went to Town Hall in Seattle last night and heard Jonah Lehrer, who's written a book called How We Decide. It's about the neural mechanisms that supply rationality, emotionality, and shoves in one direction or another when we need to make decisions. His main theme is metacognition, or thinking about how we think, so we can apply the proper strategy to making decisions. He's brilliant, funny, cute (though married) scienceblogs.com/cortex/ and is well worth seeing if he comes to your town. He's in Portland tonight and his schedule is on the blog. Time well spent! Here he is on Colbert getting the usual buzzsaw treatment but holding his own eventually.

I had a look at his blog, and it is one of the more interesting sites to see.
There also seems to be a phenomenon of memory retention being improved by
strong emotion, which is maybe post facto why exams are designed which promote anxiety
are viewed positively...
