about me
Now residing in Istanbul, I am a Middle Eastern music student, promoter, instructor and overall enthusiast. Study Turkish and Arabic percussion, mainly darbuka / tablah, but have a strong interest in many Mid East Instruments. Currently specifically interested in the Turkish Romany (gypsy) and sanat (classical) musical styles of Turkey. Through my company dhavir productions, I have produced many Mid East shows and workshops in Portland, Oregon since 2001 featuring some of America's greatest Mid East musicians and dancers. At the moment, working on an audio/photo documentary about master musicians of traditional music in Istanbul with lots of great pics of life around the city. I operate a newsletter for Middle Eastern music and dance events, shows and classes in Portland and the Pacific NW so let me know if you'd like to subscribe. Website: www.dhavir.com

Well every 2 months or so I go for a haircut. Everytime I go i ask them, as best as I can, to keep it simple and just give me a basic cut. I try to tell them I don't like hairspray, gel, blowdrying me for 15 minutes, etc., but I really think they cannot possibly fathom the thought of letting someone leave their shop without a kilo or 2 of stuff on their head.

episode 1 - the Arrival may, 30th, 2006 after a month staying with our gracious turkish friend canan, we found this great house, yes, a real 60 year old house with a big yard and garden. quite a rare and secluded little refuge from the concrete jungle of istanbul! and its really cheap. 2 bedrooms, living room, parlor and kithen and bath. it's just us upstairs and our new american friend, bob beer, in the downstairs unit so we have a lot of pr... read more
