We love you Martin Fierro!

<div>Send your positive and powerful vibes out to Martin Fierro folks.

The following came to me from Josh Atlas who got it from the Norcal Message Board who got it from the Kimock Message board:

Hello Kimock list,

I have been asked to post this here.

It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing this news. But I am asking everyone that reads this to keep hope in their heart and to not let the bird of despair rest in their hearts and heads. It is my belief that love and healing vibes can bring positive change and I am hoping that you all feel the same way.

Our dear friend Martin Fierro has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, that has spread to his hip bones. He is surrounded by his family as he starts Chemo today. Martin so loves this music community and I feel that if we can give back even a fraction of what he has soulfully given us over the years that he will feel our love and that love will assist in his medical treatments.

I have been focusing healing energy and an abundance of love towards him everyday at 5:30pm pst and I ask that you please join me in this effort, or whenever you find a quite time to do so.

I know that when Martin needed back surgery a few years ago the community stepped up to the plate and really showed Martin how much he means to us. I am hoping that happens again with a benefit concert or by way of a paypal account. His family and close friends needs to figure out what is best for Martin, and once that happens you will be sure to know what else you can do. For now, he needs our love and focused healing. (((((Martin)))))

With love and light,
Kem Smith</div>

    </a>
										<div>Thanks Miss J for the quote and image:

from Assemblymember Lloyd E. Levine:

"I last wrote about this issue to inform you of the fact that if you were one of the first people to register on the do-not-call list – the list that was established in June 2003 as a way to avoid unwanted calls from telemarketers – that it was going to be time to do so again soon because the list had a built-in expiration date of five years.

"That meant that the millions of people who signed up early would drop off the list early this year unless they signed up again. Thankfully, overwhelming votes in the House and Senate last month solved that problem by making the list permanent.

"All you have to do now is visit the Do Not Call Registry’s Web site at www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to have deleted, and you’ll be permanently on the list.

"Now, the more than 145 million Americans that by registering on the Do Not Call list have stated they do not want the sanctity of their homes invaded by telemarketers will have the peace of mind of knowing they will only have to sign up once.

"Be forewarned – the registry is not 100 percent successful. Some telemarketing companies ignore the list; some block their phone numbers so they can’t be reported. But since the registry began, the FTC has initiated 27 cases alleging do-not-call violations, and it has collected $8.8 million in civil penalties. So clearly the law is being enforced.

"Marketers have a right to speak, but they don’t have a right to force others to listen to their speech, particularly in the privacy of their own homes. The Do Not Call Registry has gone a long way toward protecting consumers’ peace and quiet at home and, thankfully, that protection now will be permanent.

"So check out the list today to make sure your information is current, or put yourself on the list for the first time if you find yourself dealing with more unwanted calls in the evening than you’d like."

Sincerely,
Assemblymember Lloyd E. Levine</div>

In a last minute development I'm very stoked to have been invited to play a couple of acoustic sets sharing the stage with my good friends in Five Eyed Hand (http://fiveeyedhand.com) on the Duck Pond at San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz tomorrow Saturday at noon. I'll be joined by another great friend, SF Bay Area bassist Josh Atlas.

If you are in the City of SF, be sure and catch FEH tonight, Friday November 2nd, at Hotel Utah at 9pm sharp. Wear a costume for the Halloween Aftermath party and get more "musical candy".

Then, tomorrow, Saturday, escape to warm and sunny beachside Santa Cruz for an afternoon of original music, good peeps and Good Times with three sets of Five Eyed Hand with yours truly and Josh Atlas playing acoustic sets in between.

Starts at noon. Bring a blanket. Vegan food available, arts and crafts, massage, and more. FREE SHOW. Be sure to allow 20-30 extra minutes for Santa Cruz beach traffic.

Getting the feeling back

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/davestein/blog/a25f1af1-a65d-4003-ab1f-65164077abeb">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/67a/0a9/67a0a985-5abf-4cd5-98d7-bcbd86f45609.thumb" width="58" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I have to admit that uprooting and moving to SF was physically, mentally and emotionally one of the hardest things we've dealt with in quite some time, me and Pumpkingirl. Five years worth of personal life, layers of artwork, amps, gadgets, clothes, dishes. Well, you can imagine all the usual schtuff that one acquires, and then some. It was one big U-haul truck, 2 U-haul trailer rentals and about six trips in in our pickup. And all we could do to drag our asses to Jerry Day, which was right around the corner.

But after more than six weeks, we're finally starting to settle in. Lovin' our new (old) Victorian 12 foot ceilings, 8 foot double hung windows, fat moldings all around (old redwood underneath the paint). Our place was built in 1888 before the Mission was even incorporated into the City of San Francisco.

Lovin' walking to coffee shops, burger joints, Blondie's, 12G's, BARTing it to the mastering studio (studio album SO CLOSE), taking BART and a cab to North Beach gigs at Giordano Brothers and Grant &amp; Green.

Looking forward to walking along in the Mission in the rain. Lately, those chilly winds do blow, signaling the coming of the cold, rain and . . . well, no snow, but you get the idea.</div>

Saturday night Grant and Green, SF, DSB and OSP

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/davestein/blog/58870beb-8a9d-46e7-b93a-647c5ec355e3">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/9fe/75c/9fe75c33-a612-41f6-826c-c6c948fe5652.thumb" width="65" height="57" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>And now a bit of shameless self promotion: no shame because I'm really excited about this and I want to make sure you know about it. Also, some of you are my friends and this may be the one SF show you're obligated to attend! Just kidding . . . half.

Pls save a night to kick up the green vibe at Grant and Green, Saturday, Sept 22nd at 9PM in North Beach. How is this event "Green"?

1. Public transportation options abound. (SF Muni, $5 cab ride from Montgomery Bart) - check 511.org to plan your "trip".
2. Grant and Green practices strict beverage container and paper recycling practices.
3. There are not one, but two bathrooms for beer "recycling".
4. No cover, so you can keep more of your own "green"
5. It's on "Green" Street (at Grant, get it?!)
6. Bring your own "green". (heh heh)

The music, oh yeah, Stevie Wonder meets Phish in a show set against the backdrop of the balmy cit-tay. DSB will feature myself on guitar/vocals (it's the songs, man!), Ryan Vandenbroeck on keys, Greg Garvey on Bass and Jesse Hiller on Drums.

Sharing the stage will be Open Space Project. Rumour has it that this may be Ryan's last show with OSP.

The night will be sultry, mama, but you won't get thrown from the train, yo!

Open Space Project opens laying down high energy rock, jazz, and funk-oriented grooves. A night of live funk, jam and improv.

Did I mention that a bunch of your friends will be there?

KTMP! (Keep the music-a pumpin')

RSVP below.</div>

    </a>
										<div>Well, OK. I am now officially a resident of SF! It's been four weeks since my last slumber in the Santa Cruz Mountains (cue banjo music). Though initially, it's been somewhat isolating, what with several musical friends I'd like to support in Santa Cruz County. But it's also been nice to have already hosted some of my Zayante Party Planner friends overnight for one of the New Monsoon shows at the Independent. It's kind of cool to do the reverse weekend thing (reverse for us) by heading to the cool-eye mountains for the Zayante Hoedown and the weekend at Steve's and being able to return "home" to the city.

Why did we move? Well, Terri and I had been spending so many nights up here for various reasons musical and social with friends, and in hotels that we figured it was high time we lived here! So we loaded up the truck and moved to . . . the Mission . . . tacquerias . . . liquor stores . . . BART! Seriously, we found the mondo value crib complete with ground floor music room for those weekly jams and occasional recordings, and storage for the growing collection of stringed zithers (guitars). Look for our first official party announcement for our "before" party which will come "before" we tear out a kitchen wall and replace some of the most hideous bathroom flooring and checkerboard wall tile you've ever seen.

The other reason we chose to move was a combination of lifestyle and believe it or not, the environment. Though we were surrounded by the majestic redwoods, the San Lorenzo river with the "Garden of Eden" swimming hole, there was no frickin' place to walk! That simplest form of ambulation, that easy, essential escape from the house, that God-given right we hopefully take for granted as able bi-peds. And Felton was relatively convenient. Living near 9, all of our needs were within a mile away, New Leaf Market, the video store, post office, and even the licker. But we noted for years, one might even say complained, about the lack of a sidewalk and, after a while, it seemed crazy dangerous to bike on 9, though we used to bike to Santa Cruz at less busy times.

Another advantage to living where we do now is the public transportation. We went the six miles from our house to Golden Gate Park in just 20 or 30 minutes with one train and one bus, no waiting for either. Unfortunately, I got a call from the mastering studio just as we got there and had to come back for an emergency session (still trying to master the Velvet Hammer CD, and while I won't say it's cursed, I will say it's haunted . . . more on that later . . . )

It's become trendy to use the buzzword, "green", but it's nice to have the awareness and control over what we throw in the landfill, what we put in the air, and what we run down the drain. I can see that, living here, our cars are going to run A LOT less. We're going to be walking A LOT more (which will help with any spare tire abatement that might be needed from time to time). In the words of Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber, "Oy loik it A LOT". (don't want to get too righteous about all of this. I have recently formed a number of opinions about going green" and one of my major pet peeves is this "more correct than thou" attitude occassionally encountered at the "green" building supply store . . . more on that later as well)

If you've made it this far, my hat is off to you because you're either getting paid right now to be reading this at work (snurfing the net), or you have the freedom and fortitude to be reading on your own time. In either case, blessings upon you. And, oh yeah, keep the music pumpin'!</div>

    </a>
										<div>It has been an incredibly fun and busy summer so far this year. Now that I have a minute to breathe, I want to give props to my friend and compatriate Derek Bodkin. It has been my sincere pleasure to share part of the ride throughout this summer's "Beer Me" Tour and the controversial "Home for High Sierra" Weekend in the SF Bay Area with Derek playing drums and singing.

Derek, I'm still working on tracking down the recording from Home for High Sierra Henfling's and from Fernwood "Beer Me" Finale. Please stand by.

At Fernwood Resort in Big Sur, a few of us were treated to an intimate demonstration of Derek's incredibly precise and mesmerizing guitar fingerpicking technique.

Not to mention his generosity of spirit, warmth, sincerity and, ahem . . . he means what he says and does what he SAYS he'll do.

I was also stoked to join Derek this past spring at the Connecticut Yankee on his breakfast jam following Railroad Earth at the Great American Music Hall. It was a total pleasure to serenade some of the members of Railroad Earth and crew as well as a few familiar friends.

Thanks for kicking ass on virtually every aspect of the DSB magical "keep the music pumpin" machine from the glourious to the mundane. DSB loves Derek Bodkin and we wish him the best with his continuing endeavors in Five Eyed Hand and his upcoming solo appearances and tour.</div>

<div>Here's something different, instrumental music from yours truly and friends, Ryan, Greg
and Adam, otherwise known as the Bubhub. Gordon Biersch, San Francisco, serving kynd
beers with a bit of SF soul. We'll be playing funk rock (ala Stevie Wonder meets GD/Phish)
sans vocals. This won't be the usual high powered dancing, prancin' Bubhub, but more of a
laid back jam session, easy on the eardrums but engaging to the mind. OK, sales pitch
over, just a heads up on something a little different.

    </a>
										<div>As we're not scheduled to play at High Sierra Music Festival this year, we've opted to
perform for our die hard friends and fans and do our best to conjur the spirits of festivals
past and bring them to you in two locations in the Bay Area.

We're calling it "Home for High Sierra" and it'll take place at Henfling's Tavern on Saturday
night, 07-07-07 at 9PM.

I think it will be a good, fun crowd. I know there is a barbecue going on that afternoon.
There are a couple of afterparties going on as well.

I'll be joined by my friends Ryan Vandenbroeck (keys and vocals), Derek Bodkin (drums
and vocals) and Greg Garvey on bass as DSB hosts a music portion of "Home for HIgh
Sierra" weekend.

BTW, we're kicking it off at Beckett's Pub in Berkeley on Friday night, 2007-07-06 at 10PM.

Thanks!

<div>Just wanted to let you all know that a friend turned me on to a last minute booking at Giordano Bros in North Beach. I'll be playing as a trio with (Greg Garvey) bass and (Adam) drums at Giordano Bros. home of the Pittsburgh style sandwich (with the fries inside!). I'm hopeful for a surprise appearance by Gary Goldsworthy who figured prominently into my 2004 solo CD "Tomorrow Still Has Me".

Unfortunately, Bubhub standby Ryan Vandenbroeck and drummer Derek Bodkin will be at another gig, so this won't be a true Bubhub (whatever that is), but I expect it to be a fun, intimate show in the city. So if you're SF bound or resident, come out for a beer and some food. Show is from 9ish to about 12:30.

Summer's Here and the time is right . . .

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/davestein/blog/95d25e16-56e2-4f15-81c9-e124d1ea8486">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/d53/4f6/d534f608-fbac-4059-b99d-06a42ad55635.thumb" width="65" height="58" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Well, here we are, the first official day of summer 2007. The unexplained con trails unexplainably absent from the skies over sunny Santa Cruz. I find myself during this period of retrograde Mercury strangely moved to drop a smooth one into this pond of communication and energy.

"The moon and venus . . . they have their way with us." - from "Sun Goes Down", D. Stein, written at sunset during generator-powered desert jam somewhere between Barstow and Las Vegas.

First off, so many things are coming to a head for me personally, artistically and creatively that its time to take a breath catch up.

So here's the haps. We've taken on unofficial sponsor Gordon Biersch, the big West Coast craft brewer who's got us busy all summer (and beyond) playing music. Between GB's San Francisco and San Jose locations, and along with a few other quality establishments like Jupiter Beers a true microbrewery with live Jazz and Rock) in Berkeley, and Beckett's Pub also in Berkeley it's become clear that part of our mission this summer is to provide the backdrop for drinking quality beers and cavorting in upscale West Coast brewpubs, many of which serve food.

The SF regional Beer Me! Tour will kick off Wednesday June 27th at Jupiter in Berkeley with a kickin' lineup including myself on guitar and vocals, Ryan Vandenbroeck (keys and vocals), Derek Bodkin (singing drummer, singer/songwriter/guitarist), Greg Garvey on bass.

Of course, the Bubhub's fascination is a musical one, our musical mission is to establish persistent funk and rock grooves to clear away any bad juju and, through judicious use of repitition, establish a pattern of spinning atoms all aligned to make physiological improvements in mood, thought, emotions and body.

We will be spinning up the atoms at several locations over the next couple of weeks from Berkeley to Big Sur.

To top it all off, the long awaited release (yes, finallly!) of "Velvet Hammer" will happen at Henfling's Tavern on July 7th during the Home for High Sierra Weekend in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Not going to HSMF? Other events surrounding our July 7th show will accumulate and combine to make it a fun and memorable weekend if you're not going to the Fest in Quincy.

For the short form of this announcement with dates, locations and links to show venues, please see http://davesteinmusic.com where you can hear samples of the upcoming self produced "Velvet Hammer" featuring myself, Ryan Vandenbroeck, Martin Fierro, Greg Garvey and Marty Ylitalo.

'Til then,
Peace to you.</div>

    </a>
										<div>Wellsir, (and ma'am),

It seems in the midst of this ragingly great spring time weather we're being treated to in the SF Bay Area, we are once again fast approaching another opportunity for relaxa-shon, fascina-shon and socializa-shon perhaps after a long week of work, or if you're so fortunate and inclined, a long week of surfing, lazing around and bong hits. Whatever ails you or wherever your head is at, I guarantee we can improve your mood without the use of medical institutions, therapists, toxic pharamceuticals, or herbs, though use of the latter is entirely up to you!

A boastful claim? I assure you it's not with the likes of Ryan Vandenbroeck (keys and vocals), Derek Bodkin (drums and vocals), Greg Garvey (bass) and myself (guitar and vocals) serving up mid-tempo and up-tempo grooves al la funk rock designed and delivered to hum and resonate within your very core.

Come join us as we deliberately inject a stain of soul onto the clean, but ordinarily sterile streets of the Pan-Cultural New Yuppist San Jose downtown. It has been built just for you, new brick facades, heat lamps, wrought iron tables upon which fresh Gordon Biersch craft brews and hot appetizers and entreès will be brought to you by svelt and stylish twenty-something wait staff, some of who may be sporting urban mohawks and others of the latest coifs, all of whom have respectfully silenced their cell phones and blackberry's to enhance and heighten your dining, drinking and dancing pleasure.

Ryan Vandenbroeck will (of course!) be serving up flowing smooth, ocassionally complex, often multi-faceted sounds of piano, electric pianos, organ, clavinet. We will be joined by our returning bass player Greg Garvey (formerly of Plum Crazy) who took April off to ensure the safe and healthy delivery of his newborn girl. As he says he's "up to his ears in babies", as Grace is his second. We are fortunate once again, and through the end of June to have Derek Bodkin on drums along with his formidable vocal prowess. And of course, I will be doing my very best to bring it all together using all my vocal and guitar talents in the spirit of "taking us there". (Wherever that may be, just as long as it's somewhere else.)

And whilst contractual obligations expressly prohibit myself or any other member of the band from explicitly "inciting" dancing verbally, just between you and I, in the past, when the jam got "faunky", lower extremeties could not be stopped from shaking and swaying to the beat of the drum. It's OK, San Jose shake it, baby! (Just don't put an eye out with that thang!)

There'll be no cover charge, just phat beers, wines and eats and I believe there is a full bar. And if you still want to party at midnight when we echo the last chords of our last song, the "oom-sick, oom-sick, oom-sick!" club will be happening right next door as it always does with cover and appropriate ID.</div>

										<div>Thank you for those of you who came and supported our show and party Friday night, on 4-20 at Henfling's. Penguin, One-knee, Sassy-T, Stacey, Groovy Lynn, Jim Beam, Pumpkingirl (of course!), just to name a few and everybody else who tagged down to the tavern on Friday night. This was a groovin' good time for us and a lot of other folks. It was a total blast for Ryan and I to play and sing with Derek Bodkin and Feet (from the band "is").

If you'd like to get a sense of what "happenned", please see Jim "Beam" Anderson's articulate (and highly complimentary) review of the show as posted on Norcal's Yahoo Group:

Do you listen to the radio anymore?

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/davestein/blog/d93cc7b4-e306-4c2f-a75b-78163cb16e4e">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/600/e13/600e1388-fa1b-41aa-9d2d-3d879ac35cb3.thumb" width="58" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I mentioned something about better music ruling the airwaves, mostly referring back to the 70's, and even early 80's. It was definitely before the Clearchannel, automated pellet feeder playlist machines that robotically serve the same corporate sponsored runoff over and over, day after day. I mean even in the 90's you could hear Blues Traveller and Dave Matthews, Spin Doctors (yes I'm a recovering SD fan, it's been 10 years since my last CD play), some Dead and Phish, even if it was the same two or three tracks from each artist.

Last June I received a tuner and subscription to Sirius satellite radio for my birthday. We already had Sirius Radio on the TV through Dishnetwork, so I had heard it, but with the new receiver I can hear it in the car. The Jam-On channel (Sirius 017) is my favorite station and fairly cool but I must admit they do get a bit repetitive with the rotation. Fortunately they change the playlist fairly often, but if you're on a really long trip, you'll hear the same live track from the same show several times.

Also, you need to be on the highway or at least a wide open space to have an uninterrupted feed from the satellite. so much for the Santa Cruz Mountains and the canopy of redwoods, where the music sputters on and off with equal amounts of silence.

Now, as far as free network broadcasts go, I hunt and peck to find scheduled gems like Tim Lynch's sessions on Dead to the World and other shows like Democracy Now on KPFA 94.1 Berkeley. There is some good material on KZSC (Santa Cruz) and KKUP (Cupertino) occassionally Other than that, in general, the free radio is OFF, the CD player or Satellite Radio is ON.</div>

Hi Everybody!

As we enjoy another absolutely beautiful springtime in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and I hope wherever you are in the world, I'd like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on all things DSB (DAVE STEIN BUBHUB).

If you live in the South SF Bay area, you'll want to know about our upcoming Friday, 420 Celebration at Henfling's Tavern. As you probably know there's very little else going on that night in Santa Cruz or SF. ; ) If you live near the San Lorenzo Valley, this is the ticket!

I'm incredibly stoked to be doing an extended set with such talented musicians, and all of us SING! Ryan Vandenbroeck, Derek Bodkin on drums and vocals (Five Eyed Hand) and Mike "Feet" Friest on bass and vocals (IS) and I have been working on a special extended set for the FRIDAY's 420 FEST.

We should really be calling it SVBF (Stein, Vandenbroeck, Bodkin, Friest) as this is a very special BUBHUB just for this very special occasion.

Part psychedelic swirl with smoke and lights, part Earth Day celebration, we'll be sharing the stage that night with Santa Cruz Mountain phenom Dream Asylum, (formerly Skeleton Cruz). Derek will also be singing and drumming (and who knows what else) with DA!

We hope this night will harken back and transport you to the days when better music ruled the airwaves and gas was cheap!

Are you paying (Federal) taxes this year?

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/davestein/blog/31b956f7-f95c-49ca-8b1c-6788e6dd6cb2">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/84a/f41/84af41d2-a51e-4a97-8c07-b81dd813b943.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Did you know that thousands of Americans are refusing to pay a part or all of their federal income tax this year? And that about 40 cents out of every dollar you pay goes towards military related spending? What if we all stopped paying taxes? You may receive threatening letters, to garnish your wages, put a lein on your property, and other financial penalties. But the IRS doesn't have the people to come after all of us.

Just a brief thought . . . </div>
