about me
Different Drummer Belly Dancers mixes traditional belly dancing and modern music, borrowing from cabaret, American Tribal, and Dunyavi Gypsy styles of belly dance. We believe the power, beauty, joy, and grace of belly dance can be expressed in our modern 20th and 21st century music. Plus audiences love it!
Basically, if it is belly dance, we'll do it. Plus the director believes in performing and taking risks. :)

This is a fieldwork research project, so if you or anyone you know would like to volunteer for an interview--face-to-face if you're local, over e-mail if you're not--please read below and let me know! Recommendations for stuff to look at (websites, youtube clips, etc.) are also welcome.

Greetings. My name is Jeana Jorgensen, and I am a Ph.D. student in folklore at Indiana University as well as a belly dancer. I am conducting research on the connections between belly dance and expressions of the numinous and mysterious, and I would like to interview you for this project. I am interested in your thoughts on costuming and music choice, improvised and fixed choreography, and cross-cultural and personal symbolism, as they all relate to spirituality, the divine, and supernatural elements within belly dance. You may have performed dances that have these qualities, or perhaps you have viewed such dances, or thought about these elements in your own life. I would like to interview you, in person or through e-mail, using a series of questions meant to get at your understandings of belly dance and the numinous. I intend to use this data in papers for my coursework, as well as to present at a conference and possibly publish. There will be identifiers used in these papers, but you may choose to use only your first name or a pseudonym and have me remove contextual information that would allow somebody to identify you. Thank you. Please feel free to ask me any questions about my research methods. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail at jeanaj@gmail.com. I will e-mail you my questions as well as a request for your snail-mail address so I can send you a consent form, which will allow you to agree to the study under appropriately informed conditions.
Hey all out in Livejournal land! Different Drummer is performing at the Morgan County library November 10th. Come on out and see us. There will be dancing and some talking [but about dancing so it's OK] a little bit of basic instruction and a lot of shakin' it. So if you've got a yen to see even more belly dancing in a library setting [not exactly sure when it has happened before but undoubtedly some time], then come on out and see us! Check out our website for more details and the news on other upcoming events [http://ddbd.org] - Lest we forget Tribal Pura 2008.
