Leading Horses to Water

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

That particular saying is actually true for horses as well as people. I grew up on a farm in Australia that had its own water well; whenever we took our horses to shows and gymkhanas we had to take a small tank of our well water, because our horses would not drink any town or treated water. Smart horses, but a lot of lugging extra stuff around for us.

How the saying applies to people is that you can give them or show them all the good advice and the right avenues but if they don't use that advice they aren't drinking the water you gave them. Very frustrating and can be a lot of wasted time and effort. Plus the persons needing advice often do get very thirsty and go downhill from not listening to or using good advice.

If you've ever watched shows like Project Runway (my favorite reality show) where Tim Gun, the mentor, tells fashion designers what the judges will like or not and the designers don't take his advice and loose the challenge, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The same is true in any profession or project.

I've run an arts employment service for 8 years now, talking to employers and getting their input, reading thousands of resumes, giving consultations to freelancers etc. I also help run festivals and events and consult on marketing, funding, sponsorship, co-ordination and 1001 other things as it takes a lot of departments to run a festival. I love my work most of the time, but what I don't love about it is when I give free advice and time and research to a struggling person or group on some basic ABC's and they don't listen or follow up, then they wonder why they can't get a gig or their project fell down. That is it in a nutshell but I will go on in an attempt vent this thing off my tits.

Folks, you have to stop your mind chatter of what you think you know and start listening to the people who know it or who have been through it for real. Until you've been through it a few times yourself you haven't a clue, honestly. We are all guilty of it, I've been there thinking I knew it all or part and didn't listen to those that did and I've fallen on my ass so hard my teeth flew from San Francisco to Sydney; not to mention the trauma sized embarrassment and ensuing therapy sessions. Or on a smaller scale, didn't get the gigs I wanted.

My own mind was telling me preprogrammed stuff, which sometimes does work for me, but I should have been ignoring it so that I could listen to the person in front of me and/or read the signs in front of me. If not from meditation, at least from better respect for that person or the situation. My gods and goddesses, trees and poets my life would have been a lot easer and things would have clicked into place faster if I had followed that bit of advice.

Anybody who lives and makes a steady living in San Francisco or any major city, or nearby, will agree that you cannot flake or ego around, and you do need mentors, especially when getting into higher career and salary levels or in any kind of business. In the corporate world mentors are highly paid consultants, even CEO's of major corporations, politicians, film producers have mentors. How do you think they got to know all the answers to be in the positions they are in?

Advice is both a precious and dangerous thing; it can be taken the wrong way, it takes a lot of energy from the experiences of the advice giver, and it can save your ass. But you have to shut up and listen with your ears as well as your mind and you have to take that advice and use it. Yes, do what the person is telling you to do, actually get proactive on that thing and do it.

By actually using the advice given to you, even in a small way, it shows you your self, recruiters, employers, and clients that you can listen and follow direction. It also shows respect to the person taking the time to give you advice, and they might have more goodies for you.

Of course not all advice is right for everybody, that’s why I keep the advice that I give out down to basic ABC common sense with the occasional background story. Any more than that could be dangerous.

Making a Name for Yourself in Show Biz

Getting exposure and folks to know your name is not an easy task, nor is it something you sit back and see if somebody else will do for you. The same basic guidelines apply to all genres of music, film, performing arts, animation, fine arts, or writing. You have to create your audience yourself.

Here are some basic practical ways to create your audience:
• Getting exposure on productions that support charities.
• Playing or screening your work at festivals.
• Having a good fast loading web site and profile page and media.
• Getting you and your work in a film that is headed for the festival circuit.
• Getting you and your work in a TV show.
• Posting your web site in as many production directories as you can find.
• Posting your demos and reels in as many demo directories as possible.
• Getting your friends to post great reviews of your work all over the web.
• Collection the biggest mailing list you can for your shows.
• Writing a blog and answering fans’ emails.

Don’t always expect to get paid, we do it for the love of the craft and the industry, getting paid is a bonus. If you are promised to get paid and don’t get paid, that is between you and the producer, not the public. The producer needs to keep creating shows so that they have the resources to pay the rest of their talent and crew, and you in the future.

Publicly vilifying the industry or a producer won’t help, not even if you are Michael Jackson, who’s already had a successful career and made so much money it doesn’t matter if he is not signed again. All you will do there is make it harder for producers to create shows that pay people, or producers will make shows with sappy “yes men” talent who are bland. Bashing the industry or a producer might get you your 15 seconds of fame by pure chance, but no producer or promoter will want to hire you ever again, just in case it is they you attack next time.

In the entertainment industry the little guy does not have the say. The folks that produce the shows have the say, because they are the folks that take the biggest risks and hire and pay the little guys. In the 9 to 5 world there are unions and worker support groups and federal laws. There are unions in the entertainment industry, but their power only goes a little way and only on union productions. But that being said being a good sport does get you further than not.

Once you have you created your audience and following and you are making producers or promoters money, then you can have more choices and say. Until then you must suck it up and be always gracious and keep a smile on your face. It is a good rule to always be very nice to everybody and stick to the unwritten codes of entertainment industry conduct, at every stage of your career. If you are pleasant to work with and don’t behave like a loose cannon you have a lot more chances of being hired again and folks telling other folks good things about you.

Getting your big break is not all about talent, part of it is being able to compliment the show’s theme, another part is being in the right place at the right time, another part is who likes your work, and another part is who you know. It's not easy or simple and it’s more often than not about luck. Maybe that’s why traditional stage productions have historically been so superstitious; it’s a medium of good luck charms for them to get their big break.

Why & How To Use Web 2.0 & Online Entertainment Business Resources

Why?

Web 2.0 can give you a huge advantage over the competition, but you have to actually participate in it to receive the benefits.

I work on different festivals as well as develop and run Gigslist.org so my understanding of Web 2.0, online industry resources, as well as managing and marketing productions using Web 2.0 is part of the inspiration for this article. The other part of my inspiration for this article is from my observations working with many different people and corporate, as well as grassroots, and non-profit organizations.

Larger organizations, governments, news media, sponsors, and institutions that smaller organizations answer to started using Web 2.0 in the year 2000. The larger organizations have automated tracking; customer service, online meetings, digital filing, and gathering email lists while many smaller organizations are still using paper files and snail mail, even in 2008. And the smaller organizations are falling way behind.

Nobody has the choice to avoid computers, new software, or new business procedures anymore. Opportunities no longer wait for you to go down to a printing service to print a proposal out so you can snail mail it. Opportunities now expect you to be able to edit photos and proposals yourself and have it in PDF and emailed within an hour of their email or phone call. On a positive note this saves a hell of a lot of trees as well as your time and printing and postage costs. That being said, I have personally experienced how intimidating new software or ways of using the computer can be.

Generation Y has the Internet ingrained since small children. But certain Generation X, Baby Boomers, and seniors are still struggling, which is affecting their career growth as well as the growth of the productions or organizations they work for. In extreme cases some people are left on the shelf and organizations have had to cut back or hire new management, or in worst cases have closed down all together. I can’t mention names but I have seen it actually get that bad for some organizations.

Web sites are no longer just fancy brochures, they are interactive vital parts of your marketing, management, sponsors perks, tracking, and production. The front end is for the public to communicate and interact and be entertained, the backend is for tracking and managing staff and projects. Software such as Mambo and Joomla are last century, now the standards are Plone and Drupal. And if you don’t know what all that means then it is past time that you learned.

There are no two ways about it; freelancers, staff, and organizations must be skilled with 21 St Century technologies, or face the very real risk of not having a job or organization to work at. Major organizations save a lot of money and increase efficiency 100 fold by using computers and the web to the full extent; they expect everybody, including you dear reader, to do the same.

The following are some simple things you can do for free on Gigslist.org to practice using Web 2.0 in an industry-dedicated community, which will also give you or your organization free advertising to an industry dedicated audience.

1) Sign up for a free www.Gigslist.org account and fill out your profile with your work or business name.
To post click “POST YOUR STUFF” in the Main Menu left column.
2) Post your resume or business ad, or a press release.
3) Post your web site link in the Production Directory.
4) Post your next event, show, or workshop.
5) Post a link to your demo reel or mp3 in Demos.
6) Write and post a tip sheet or how to article about what you do.
7) Write and post a review about somebody else’s show.
8) Surf the Production Directory and Classifieds.
9) Surf the Members list and say hi to a member.
10) Invite a friend to join for free.
11) Vote in the members’ poll.

Every web site is different so don’t expect one web site to work the same as another, it is always a matter of exploring. Don’t get frustrated, remember to breathe, and keep your eyes open for the places you need to click. Like everything else, including paper filing, it takes practice.
