Hanging with Rock Stars, Promoters, and entourage

hmmm Interesting While folks that are in it moving and shaking I seem to get along with quite well as we seem to speak the same language.... (I work in events and media)... it is some of the wives, girlfriends and entourage that need lessons in grace. Seems like the people along for the ride should really be taught know thier place. I know that sounds terrible to say but it is true as anyone who as managed a guest list will tell you. Last night after a show meeting, some wife of a sponsor who does not know me or my work made a snide comment aimed directly towards me about getting attention from a producer who was present (a friend of mine). Enough for me to say "I can't believe she just said that" to the other woman next to me. In my mind I said to the culprit "Keep your white trash manners in the trailer park." Another case is listening to the crew backstage at Earthdance. They were saying that artists's guests are the worst. They are the ones that are rude and demanding, where as the artists are there to simply do thier thing and are generally very appreciative. It is especially true for those that don't actually work in the arts and entertainment industries. Give them a laminate and they think they are Sting. But what they don't appreciate or even think about is that folks such as Sting worked long and hard and had to be nice to a lot of shitheads to get where they are today. Even the girlfriends of managers of artists or of sponsors and promoters can be bitches. I see some of them snub said artists, managers, sponsors friends because they were females, and at the cost of having a new girlfreind who could fill them in on the game rules and cool contacts.... and not to mention the almighty insiders' parties that most of these entourage crave to be at. I remember back in the 80's in oz and I was managing an event in Melbourne... A friend music tv host arrived with manager and manager's wife in tow. I went up to say hi and was approaching from behind them, the first person I said Hi to was the manager's wife. Without so much as a "How do you do" this woman said to me "Fuck off bitch". I was so shocked and angry I walked away and told the bar folk that any drinks that woman has she has to pay for herself. A while after that the woman and said manager were divorced, and I never saw her at any of the cool parties again. So the moral to this diatribe is ... if you are one of the guests, girlfreinds, wives, entourage, be very gracious, be very polite, be very nice and nery charming, cause you never know what you might miss out on or the friends you might make or new husband or boyfriend you might score if you don't. And you never really know how long somebody's memory actually is.

a bit about how resources can and can't be useful and the importance of banding together When I first moved to the USA six years ago and then looking for a job in the industry I noticed that the arts and media industries are not networked with each other. I was surfing something like 20 different web sites or paper publications to find a job. Then when I was working as a producer I noticed I had to post on 20 different sites to find staff, like music composers, props, sets, video, av, lighting etc. There was no central place for everyone to go to and it was an actual physical pain in neck. Yes I know about Craigslist, I was the person that yelled at Craig himself to put in an artists and musicians section years ago,(Craig is a neighbor, I see him most mornings at the local cafe) Out of my own frustration I developed gigslist.org and gigdirectory.net and it was showing to be competition to craigslist so they put in the Film/tv/media sections, then the Gigs sections, and many other sites have also copied what I have done over the years. (Ask my lawyer;-) (no I did not try to sue, I think the best will win out in the end and that is the honorable challenge, I was one of those well brought up young country ladies who's whole family does community work and feels suing people is distasteful. Quaker ancestors.) But just the same, those sites are copies, they are mostly not run or developed by people who have years and years of industry field experience. There are some very good film/tv only sites, but musicians and costumers don't know about them because the specialty industry sites are too many. Same with acting sites, of which many are scams and most of the rest a get rich quick schemes. The point I am trying to make is that the industry has spread itself too thin over too many resources. Film, TV, Theater, and now video games need musicians, artists, actors, designers, props, and the rest and visa versa. To have each industry and skill set on un-networked individual sites is diluting the mix so much that nobody can find anything or anybody anymore. The work is out there, I actually find way more paid industry jobs than I have time to physically post. (if one of you would like help me with the Directors/Producers/ and/or Film/Vid/TV sections let me know, no pay at this time, but I can offer banner advertising) Because I do work in the industry I get to talk to quite a few arts employers one on one. Many don't like craigslist or other free to view sites because they are open to the public and employers get way too many unqualified resumes which wastes a lot of time and money in sorting them out. This also causes the qualified folks to get lost in the storm of resumes saying "make me a star" - yes they and I do get posts like that. Starting up new resource doesn't work as there are already too many. Plus it takes years for large companies to take you seriously enough to allow you to post their names on your front page, and to post opportunities themselves. Not all web sites work the same, and I know some of you have checked out Gigdirectory.net and had problems with it. I do take note of every complaint and suggestion, that is how Gigdirectory and Gigslist were developed in the first place. I had a meeting with a new programmer yesterday and the bugs are on their way to being worked out. It will send me into a lot of debt, but the industry needs Gigdirectory.net, as it is they only one in the USA that has gotten this far and is this comprehensive. (no we don't get rich from subscriber sites, nor does the banner advertising fly off the rack, all of us running the better resources barely get a wage if we are lucky, mainly because of copy sites, to which this greatly hampers our funding for improvements) FYI: The industry and skill sets that post the most resumes and production directory listings are Film, Video, Music, Acting Screen. Not in any particular order. there are folks out there developing ways to help you, ya just gotta start supporting them and using their resources so they can develop and become even more helpful to you Deborah
