Dances of the Desert

Join us for a tribal fusion workshop focusing on India’s sacred dances…
Odissi and Kalbelia.

Our dance journey will introduce these dance forms and related cultures. We will experiment with adding elements of these distinctive traditional dances to a modern Tribal Belly Dance choreography. As well have the opportunity to overview the histories of belly dance, Odissi, Kalbelia, and explore their existing connection with each other and sacred dance in general.

Tenley just arrived home earlier this month, and has returned with fresh dance downloads ready to share and inspire. Workshop includes for starters her yoga designed for belly dancers, pieces of the Odissi power warm up and strengthening, and a selection of drills. Mudras, body positioning, eye and head details of Odissi will be practiced along with a selection of Kalbelia’s vibrant movements including hand articulations, turns, and floor work.

This workshop is open for all level of dancers and lovers of dance, yet should be noted that the basics of Tribal will not be reviewed here. We will utilize our time focusing on Odissi, Kalbelia, and merging them into a Tribal choreography.

A selection of tribal goods and music from Rajasthan and Gujarat will be available for purchase or orders.
