It has been too long since I've done a photo shoot! Does anyone want some portraits taken? No, not high school photo stuff! I have some ideas of what I'd like to do, but I'm open to YOUR ideas, too. Like high fashion (see attached pic).

My mom died on Sunday. I'm more relieved than sad. She was 88 years old and had lived a very full and interesting life. I really enjoyed her telling stories about growing up in Everett, WA in the very early days, with all the hookers and eccentrics that populated the town. Her family was in the "death" business - operating funeral homes and casket factories. Funny that she married a doctor.

She had a stroke a couple of years ago that left her somewhat disabled. Then she had a big one in February that really took it's toll. It was difficult to visit her when she couldn't get around or communicate very well. On Sunday, she went to sleep and didn't wake up. That's a good way to go.

This in my favorite picture of her. What a vamp!

So, my darling daughter Devin started her first year at Gonzaga University this year. The first week she was there she was SO bummed because she said that it was so hard and EVERYONE was way smarter than her. Well, she got her grades for the Fall semester. She got all A's with a few A-'s and she's on the President's List.

Good job, Ms. D!

Seems timely...

I know this isn't festive, but it's moving. I first heard The Seattle Men's Chorus perform this song at one of its Christmas concerts. It's based on a real event diring WWI. Considering our current situation in Iraq, it seems appropriate. I don't support the war, but I support the troops that have been forced to be in it (well, most of them):

Christmas in the Trenches
(John McCutcheon)
________________________________________
My name is Francis Tolliver, I come from Liverpool.
Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.
To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here
I fought for King and country I love dear.
'Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung,
The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung
Our families back in England were toasting us that day
Their brave and glorious lads so far away.
I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground
When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound
Says I, ``Now listen up, me boys!'' each soldier strained to hear
As one young German voice sang out so clear.
``He's singing bloody well, you know!'' my partner says to me
Soon, one by one, each German voice joined in harmony
The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more
As Christmas brought us respite from the war
As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent
``God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen'' struck up some lads from Kent
The next they sang was ``Stille Nacht.'' ``Tis `Silent Night','' says I
And in two tongues one song filled up that sky
``There's someone coming toward us!'' the front line sentry cried
All sights were fixed on one long figure trudging from their side
His truce flag, like a Christmas star, shown on that plain so bright
As he, bravely, strode unarmed into the night
Soon one by one on either side walked into No Man's Land
With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand
We shared some secret brandy and we wished each other well
And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell
We traded chocolates, cigarettes, and photographs from home
These sons and fathers far away from families of their own
Young Sanders played his squeezebox and they had a violin
This curious and unlikely band of men
Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more
With sad farewells we each prepared to settle back to war
But the question haunted every heart that lived that wonderous night
``Whose family have I fixed within my sights?''
'Twas Christmas in the trenches where the frost, so bitter hung
The frozen fields of France were warmed as songs of peace were sung
For the walls they'd kept between us to exact the work of war
Had been crumbled and were gone forevermore
My name is Francis Tolliver, in Liverpool I dwell
Each Christmas come since World War I, I've learned its lessons well
That the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame
And on each end of the rifle we're the same

I was in Spokane this weekend visiting my daughter at her college and Dutch's was a couple blocks from where we had lunch.

The staff isn't surly - just kinda preoccupied with chatting with friends and among themselves. The quality of stuff is so-so. My daughter described it as a "vintage" guitar store. Just "used" would be a better description. But, they had lots of instruments, and the other side of the store had lots of pawn shop types of things.

The prices were NOT high. She bought a used Danelectro guitar - very 50's retro and the price was pretty good - and they threw in a case for it.

Her music prof plays guitar and says that the place has the best guitar repair shop in Eastern Washington.

It was fun!

So, what's the weirdest thing that's happened to YOU lately?

I wish I had a photo to go with this.

Today, I went to make a bank deposit. My bank has a branch in my building and there's an escalator that goes from the main lobby of the building down to the bank branch. So, I stepped onto the "down" escalator, and there was this conservatively dressed guy (Dockers, dress shirt, conservative haircut, wire-rimmed glasses) walking UP the "down" escalator with a very serious look on his face. When he saw me step onto the escalator, he gave me this scowl, spins around, walked down the escalator to the bank branch and rode the "up" escalator, still glaring at me like I'd spit on him or something. Did I ruin his fun for the day? Too weird!

Report from college...

Here's an email I got from my daughter, who started college last week. This is SO typical of her. BTW, Martha is her roommate and their dorm is called Goller (after some guy named "Goller"):

> Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't reply to your e-mail before. I wasn't too busy, I
> just felt like I didn't have much to say.
>
> I guess Dillon/Goller has a residence hall council, and the president of
> it came by all the rooms the other day to get people to run for things. I
> told her I didn't really want to run for anything, but later on in the
> day, I saw that she had left a note on my white board asking me to write
> up a bio and run for sweatshirt chair. Sweatshirt chair is the person who
> designs and orders the sweatshirts/pants, shorts, t-shirts, etc. for the 2
> dorms. I figured that since she was asking, she had no one that was
> running so I sent her a bio. Then we got ballots for voting yesterday, and
> 2 other people were running for sweatshirt chair! >( Oh well, no worries.
> We all received packets with every bio in them, and mine was clearly the
> most convincing one:
>
> "My name is Devin Moore (a.k.a. the cool girl who everyone should be
> friends with right now or else they might get attacked by bears because no
> one could go through life without having met someone as awesome as she,
> what with her clever wit, charming yet somewhat intimidating good looks,
> and remarkable skill with a set of numchucks), and I'm running for
> sweatshirt chair. Huzzah!"
>
> See? I'm pretty sure I'll win. Anyway, I'll let you know more about that
> later. Oh yeah,
> Martha and I have been putting "Questions of the Day" on our white board
> for everyone to answer when they stop by our room. Today's question is,
> "If train A leaves Seattle at 8 am traveling North at 60 mph, and train B
> leaves Boston at 9 am traveling West at 70 mph, which animal has a better
> chance of learning to fly? A. pig, B. llama, C. ferret, or D. Yes."
> Everyone always thinks there is a right answer too, which I think is what
> amuses Martha and I the most.
>
> Anyway, I have to finish writing this essay now, so bye bye.
>
> -Devin

I bought a couple of tickets to Niyaz, who is performing in Seattle this Saturday at 8:00 PM. My son was going to go with me, but he learned that he has to work all weekend. So, that leaves me with an extra ticket because my wife and other son hate Middle Eastern fusion music. The seats are in the "A" section at Town Hall (1119 8th Ave.)
