THE GODS MUST BE LAZY

The Bizzaro Starter Kit (Orange)

"Bizarro" is a new genre, I guess analogous to "The New Weird" writing of people like China Mieville and Ben Rosenblum, but less interested in narrative or science fiction concepts, apparently, and more about shocking with bizarre language. Bizarro fiction deals with strange, grotesque and absurdist subject matter, often with a science fiction or fantasy tinge, and lots of black humor.

The Bizzaro Starter Kit (Orange) is a collection of short stories and novella's by various writers in the genre, like Jeremy Robert Johnson's 'Extinction Journals,' which details the life of a man who survives a nuclear holocaust by wearing a suit made of living cockroaches, and Carlton Mellick's 'Baby Jesus Buttplug,' which I'll leave to your imaginations.

While the quality of the stories is uneven, I was definitely entertained. My favorites were Extinction Journals, Suicide Girls In The Afterlife and The Greatest Fucking Moment in Sports History.

There is also a "Blue" version of the Bizarro Starter Kit out there, with completely different stories and writers, which I have yet to read but I'm really eager to get, as it's edited by Steve Aylett, author of the wonderful "Lint". I can't wait!

I'm currently reading Mieville's "Scar", so I find it hard to believe he's not interested in narrative. More interested in concepts (and politics, and sociology) than narrative, but since the majority of writers out there are more interested in cliche than narrative, I can't find fault with that. Clive Barker is more interested in ideas than narrative, f'r instance, and look where that gets you.

Clive Barker needs an editor, IMHO.

I really liked his early works, esp. "Books of Blood" and "Weaveworld," which were either succinct and entertaining ("Books") or epic and rich ("Weaveworld"). And who doesn't love the first two "Hellraiser" films"?

But then he got fucking wordy. I stopped "Great and Secret Show" after about 100 pages. Bored me to tears. Maybe he's better now -- feedback on this? I just looked at "Mister B. Gone" at a bookstore, and it looked intriguing.

Uh, just a quick correction Mike, I was trying to say that it's the Bizzaro writers who seem less interested in narrative than writers like Mieville. I like him too!

And I know, I'm supposed to be doing the comics reviews, right? Well, I've been broke, sue me. But I'll review some comics tonight!

I liked Clive Barker's early stuff too, and abandoned him after Imajica. This happens a lot, we like an author or musicians early stuff but drop them as time goes on. I wonder if it's a matter of the artist running out of steam or that we've grown beyond our interest in them. I'm sure it's a little of both...
