about me
Kaia Selene is a multi-disciplinary artist currently based out of Olympia, Washington. She is originally from Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico and has lived and worked in many cities including Albuquerque, Portland, San Francisco, Austin, New Orleans and Seattle. Her scope of mediums include; Butoh dance, performance art, painting, sculpture, assemblage art, installations/ environments, mask making, casting, costuming, music and writing.
She's studied and/or performed Butoh with; Katsura Kan, Yuko Kawamoto, Diego Pinion, Death Posture (whose work is based in master Atsushi Takenouchi's Jinen Butoh), Sheri Brown, Alan Sutherland and Douglas Ridings, Haruko Nishimura (of Degenerate Art Ensemble), and Helen Thorsen (of Dappin' Butoh and Last Leg into Flightime.) The many musicians who've played in performances encompass; In The Deep Museum, Celadon , Natazatan, Noise Poet Nobody, Vox Vespertinus, Dean Moore, Katrina of Sataray, Xaxis Wye, Geisterfahrer, Nequaquam Vacuum, Blind Physics, Soriah, Azphodel , Port of the Sun, Mele Pele and Magmatone Musical endeavors include solo voice work, and piano for the collaboration Endure. She has had writings published, done album and magazine cover art and contributed heavily to the ongoing explorative multi-media art shows Cabaret ReVoltaire (New Orleans 2002-2005). She has modeled for many artists including JK Potter, Dan Ouellette, Maggie Mceleney, and Heather Stevens-Ortiz; and has contributed bodily to two in-progress films, the silent Selene Of The Spirits and Visage Of Contact, an experimental film by Xaxis Wye. She is also the former co-owner of New Orleans based casting, mask making and costuming company Nethereal Designs. Current focuses include a series of ink/watercolor paintings, the creation of a short film entitled Blood-slick Petals of the Wind (a story of fragmentation and re-emergence which explores both the sacred and desperate states of beautiful chaotic love, destruction and suicide using visions, sound and movement), writing a children's book (The Adventures of P. Starlight) and on a butoh based aerial show, Aer CaeoV. Nearly all of her works stem from other-worldly imagery which is born of both sleeping and waking dreams.
