Why I voted for Reagan
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 9:19 AMthe time. The Soviet Union was a real threat and had to be dealt with.
I think Reagan would be as appalled as Carter about what the Shrub
has done to this country, however. Mondale was a no-starter. Gore
and Kerry should have learned more from that campaign.

We are gonna hafta agree to disagree on this one . . .
Carter was the messenger who killed himself (ref: "malaise") - he just wasn't as good a fear-monger as Reagan, who gave us an external enemy to hate instead of ourselves. I watched Reagan devastate the social "safety net" for states without one of their own (Southern Appalachia).
While I agree that the SU needed to be dealt with, we are currently reaping the effects of what we sowed then, letting others do our dirty work for us (Iraq/Hussein and Afghanistan military assistance/training/supply). To be fair, I voted for Reagan in 88, too (first pres election I was able to vote), for the same reason as everybody else, for the same reason they voted for Clinton in 96 . . . I had a good job and wanted things to stay the way they were. |
