Thu, May 1, 2008 - 1:59 PMI got the croton on clearance because it was smaller than the others. :) And Bonnie's paper biodegradable pots are the greatest things ever made.
so as far as flowers go... i'm 'thinking about getting some short shade loving thi9ngs to plant around some tall things? i kinda wnat to grow cosmos here, their roots are shallow enough for a container i think :D we'll see!

I would love to have an apartment garden of my own, but seclusion is a problem where I'm at.
Outdoors, I don't have a private area and I don't trust my neighbors – or their kids – to leave my plants alone. Indoors, I have 3 cats who love to kill every single green leafy thing they see. They beg for salads… I'm not kidding or exaggerating. |

Ah! I've been wanting to dig in the dirt, too. I think for Mothers' Day I'm going to spend time repotting some of the plants I inherited from my parents' house. In memory of my momma.

CROTON! What a great name.
you gots strawberries? *mouf waters*
I'd love a little garden of my own, but the only outdoor space I have is the fire escape outside of my studio apartment window. The rules say we can't use that area for storing anything. Oh well, I can kinda sorta see into my neighbor's bay window where they have all kinds of goodies growing from hanging baskets and even terrariums! |

Cosmos will grow in a pot! =)
I love cosmos. They are, I think, my favorite flower =) You know.. there are TONS of plants and seeds that are just for container growing?? Tomatoes peppers cucumbers squash and so many more can be grown upside down in BUCKETS! (drill a hole in the base and hang) I have to go and get dirt for my garden... then I can have my snap peas, beans and cucumbers. tomatoes too...but not the usual 40 plants like I'm used to =( |

Did you buy them like this? Awesome lookin' plants. I LOVE gardening. Here in MT I'm just starting my own seedlings of tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapeno & green peppers, and lots of herbs (basil, oregano and etc.) They're just little wisps of things right now but I feel like such a proud parent when one of 'em makes it through.
Then, just like when I was a little kid, I will sit in my garden in late summer during mid-afternoon with a salt shaker and pluck fresh sun-warmed tomatoes...dust 'em off and bite right into them. Sprinkle a tiny amound of salt on... I'm drooling. My favorite, favorite, favorite food in the world is a big juicy sun-warmed red tomato. |

when i was younger my grandma grew tomatoes and my brother and i would help her with her garden and we'd sit outside and eat tomatoes and yack about stuff :) it was so much fun i think i'm going to get her a tomato plant for mother's day, like a patio one she can take care of even when she's not feeling well i think i will go with cosmos, they'll sorta form a fence around my patio :) haha |

Oooh strawberries...love them! I should send you a big ol' bucket of llama manure and you'll be set! Best of luck with it all, I'm not the best gardener, but I better learn quick. Whenever we move to the middle of nowhere I'll need to know how to garden for those fresh goodies the Earth gives us!

Was gonna say...
www.nicholsgardennursery.com has a WHOLE section on small gardens and container growing. I've been to thier gardens (only about 30 min from me) and they have some of the most amazing stuff! I love the quality of plants AND seeds from them. they are a bit "expensive" tho... |
