13th Lake

Adirondack Notes

A view looking north to the high peaks of the Adirondacks from trail at Garnet Hill. Pausing at the top to enjoy the overlook before taking ski run down several miles to 13th Lake. This season 13th Lake was perfect for skate skiing. In the bright sun we could take off jackets and skate ski the several mile loop around the perimeter of the frozen lake. We took in the many views of the frozen, surrounding mountains that in the near future will include a wind turbine.

Well, for those of us who did not get enough skiing it was good to see the snow lingering in the woods up north these last weeks of March. Drove up to Thirteenth Lake in the Adirondacks just beyond North Creek. Was pleasantly surprised to find the trail to Siamese Ponds was still passable on skis. In fact, was able to skate ski because the trail had a base of ice with covering of snow. What fun to move along at speed on a back country ungroomed trail. Amazing. Found and had to step over many fallen trees that had been felled by the severe wind storm in February. In some places we went around through the woods. In spots had to dodge rocks poking through but that is spring skiing. You know that spring is here since the birds are back in numbers and can hear them singing in the woods. Could have gone for miles but had to turn back before it got dark. What fine ending to the day.
