I thought I'd mark my return with a recent happening of a darkly amusing variety. Several years ago, an acquaintance of mine who was suffering from kidney damage (self-induced) mentioned that the prognosis was bad, and he was heading for worse. I have always liked this fellow (he's an... read more

Verbatim Convinced that you can make me speak You fire first, one word questions, As if brevity might startle An answering volley from me. I will not evade your voice— Cutting, caustic with frustration. A google search for same indicates that I may be near-alone in my satisfaction with brilliant green feet after the first grass-mowing of the season. The weather here by the Ohio River has been alternating between unseasonably warm and very cool, and the grass has made a run for it. Thought I'd go play yardboy before it started SNOWING this weekend. New beds to dig...want to massively expand the vegetable garden now that John and (we hope) GirlChik are here. How nice to be outs... read more

You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in ... read more
