A little more about Layla:

Layla is not your average hairdresser, in fact it is her third “career” in her brief thirty-something years on the planet. She attended Whitman college, graduating in 1999 with a BA in Biology and Minor in Chemistry. She has the logical intellect of a scientist, but also frequently engages her creative side. Dance and music were her unofficial 2nd and 3rd minors in college, choreographing works for numerous student troupes and founding the still thriving women’s a cappella ensemble Sirens of Swank. Her first foray into the working world included stem cell research and clinical research into diet and age related eye disease at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR. At the same time, Layla was building an underground following in Portland’s rave and club scene as DJ Velo, where she eventually met her husband and current business partner, Jeff. Together in 2003, they toured the Pacific coast on their bicycles, moved to Eugene, and founded TrueLove Sound, a thriving and innovative mobile entertainment company specializing in weddings (www.truelovesound.com).

In Eugene, Layla was exposed to the tribal bellydance scene and their costuming aesthetic, and began creating unique hair adornments for her local bellydance community in 2005. Her skill quickly grew and expanded to offer realistic looking synthetic dreadlock falls and extensions that were sought after by dancers and festival goers worldwide including customers in Canada, Australia and the UK as well as all over the United States. Wanting to expand her offerings, in 2007- 2008, Layla attended school for hair design and fell in love with the craft, the sense of renewal and the possibility for transformation that it can bring.

She is incredibly blessed to work at Imagine, a creative hair studio in the heart of Eugene, Oregon - home of some of the most beautiful freaks in the world!

Dancing dancing dancing...again!

Love it!

I had so much fun with our little performance last night. I'm once again part of a student troupe, at least for last night, and for whenever it works into my schedule in the future.

I decided this year that I would start taking dance again in an effort to exercise without the gym (I hate the gym!). This time around, however, I am approaching dance in a whole new mind frame. I need to travel back a few years to explain...

Well more like 5 years, when I first moved to Eugene, I had some crazy little idea that I would make my living as a dancer. OK not so crazy of an idea for some, and really not even for me at the time, but life had other plans for me. After an absent minded driver ran a red light while I happened to be driving through the center of the intersection, the chronic pain in my back ended those ambitions.

But looking even further back in my dance history, I was always pushing through injury. Leading up to state competition my senior year on high school dance team, I was wearing a back, ankle and wrist brace to practice every day, and in my triumphant performance as part of the all-state team, you can clearly see my bandage wrapped hamstring under my white tights and mini skirt swinging high against my chest in the kickline. Pain was part of it, and I prided myself on ignoring it and pushing it as far as it would go. I knew that I was one of the best and that I could really stand out, and no amount of pain would get in the way of that.

Fast forward about 13 years to this January, I started dance with Luminessah and I've felt so different and calm about my approach to it all. I really have no great ambition in dance anymore. I love the amazing community and people I have met and created amazing relationships and friendships with through dance. I love to have such an amazing outlet for creativity, a reason to try out new looks and collect crazy shiny baubles. And yes, I love to occasionally get on a stage and strut it, but I care not for whom and how many - I just wanna make you smile!

And that I did! I got so many great compliments last night about my projection, my "flirtatious looks" and energy in general, and yes it felt great! What felt the best was that I know my body doesn't flow and move the way it has in the past, and that's a part of life, but I know that I can perform and project my sense of fun and joy that I feel to just move again to people, and that's what its all about!

So thank you Luminessah for the opportunity to get up on stage again, and thanks to Lina and Serene for being such great dance partners!

I wish that everyone can find their sense of bliss in dance wherever it lies!

Planted one row... 4 to go!

I love making my garden happen - I feel like I learn so much from the patience and timing of raising plants.

This weekend despite being severely tired, the sun came out Sunday and warmed me up and out of the house and before I knew it I was cleaning up my first veggie bed. Last year it had been home to tomatoes, but I always try and rotate so as not to deplete the soil and confuse pests that think of taking up residence on plants from a similar family.

This year my deepest bed will once again host root veggies and a few sugar snap peas. I planted a row of red samauri carrots mixed with french breakfast radishes, some teeny tiny walla walla sweet onions and some garlic that I rescued from our new lawn that had once had a home in some floating beds that I got rid of last fall because although they were pretty to look at, they were a pain to maintain.

This year I'm going to expand with three more beds along the fence, making use of the sunniest part of the yard and simplifying my layout quite a bit. I'm planning to add lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, basil, beans and corn, at least.

I love the magic of it all - watching it grow from almost nothing to giant monster sized plants taking over the entire corner, bursting with edible goodness! I'm definitely planting more than I need this year with the intention of having a few harvest parties for friends, cause I hate seeing good veggies go to waste!

Yay for plants!
