Poi and Art Related Rambling

So I finally made it to the practice at Boston University and it was really fun. I had a good time and it felt great to get out there and spin. Everyone there seemed to be really excited and practice just went on as usual. I don't know if I'll make a habit of going because it was so late by the time I got home. I was falling asleep at the wheel on my way to work the next day.

FINALLY SOME GREAT WEATHER! Wildfire was awesome in the sun. I actually got to take lessons, burn, and flit around to chat. It definitely felt too crowded for my taste, rather more impersonal than it used to be. I took my first drumming lesson and it was a lot of fun even if I couldn't follow along too well. Spinning to the drummers is my all time favorite. I'm still picking up tricks but have not yet figured out how to put them all together in a way that flows nicely without getting whacked in the face. Storyteller took a zillion photos. This is one of them. I wish I could afford him a nice camera and some classes. He's got a knack.

My favorite customized glow poi went "missing." I absentmindedly left them with (or in) my sweatshirt under a bench and the disappeared. *pout* Oh well, it was worth it.

I had such a great time at WF last weekend (despite the rain). I picked up some new tricks and people taught me how to improve my old ones (yaay hyperloops!!) I took loads of classes and my body is so exhausted (my favorite part.) I got to spend loads of quality time with my boyfriend as it was something of an anniversary for us. Unfortunately I didn't spend a lot of personal time with loads of other people I should have stopped and had proper conversations with. The crowd was really big and I was so busy that I kept to myself. I'm really thankful to everyone who helped make it all possible.

So after much wild-goose-chasery I discovered it is way too complicated to commute to the Boston University poi practices. It's over an hour by train and since it's right during rush hour, the same by car. it wouldn't be as bad if the timing weren't sucky. So after a crashing mood swing after work this afternoon, I finally convinced myself I should both go to the gym and go practice poi after - oh and ride my bike there and back. I only made it to Montserrat Station (on the way to the gym) before realizing I'd forgotten water and that bike riding in the sun made me dizzyingly thirsty. So I grabbed a water from a nearby shop and gave up on the gym because I was already feeling pretty crappy about myself and being there is just miserable. I wound up spinning at the Beverly Comons. It was mostly desolate until some jocks showed up to play football and act like jerks. But by then I'd already pushed myself really hard for an hour and was just practicing isolations being graceful.

I'm just showing signs of isolation movements across the body. I can't do buzzsaws with my new ribbon poi (cause the ribbons hit me in the face) so I didn't even practice rowing. I also practiced some old basic moves I'd forgotten about and saw a lot of progress in doing them in reverse. It was really nice because I spun through sunset and could watch my shadown on the ground. I wish I had a big mirror outside that I could practice in.

Anyways, I feel really good today because I did a really hard workout and didn't set foot inside of a gym. I find that I work much harder, concentrate better, and make more progress when I'm alone.

First, last night I discovered the key to my ability to hyperloop - twisted oval link chains instead of ballchain. Less slipage. Still can't get it smoothly. It's wierd, I love my ballchained monkeyfists, but lately my twisted oval link cylinder poi have been easier to manipulate. I discovered this at flatrocks last night. Unfortunately we didn't have any fuel so I couldn't work on it lit. Well, lit on fire anyways.

Okay, last weekend - Wildfire! I had a good time despite the rain. The organizers did an AMAZING job, as usual. I got to take a really decent firedart class. Other than that I was lazy as hell and just decided to focus on chilling out and relaxing with friends. Did some swimming after the rain so it was sooooo cold. I didn't burn as much as I wanted to. My first burn was terrible so it kind of put me off burning. I don't like the crowded field. I suppose if I had stayed up later, the field wouldn't have been so crowded. But I crashed early this year cause life just has me tired. The best part about that was that I've been listening to audio books on my headphones while I sleep for the past 6 months so I could actually fall asleep while the chaos was happening and sleep through it. Although I'm listening to this story called Eragon by Chris Paolini and it's kinda boring. *shrug* Whatever, it helped me sleep through festival chaos. I've got some much better ideas for signs next year even though people seemed to really like the ones that I made. I drove by them and turned my critical eye on them more harshly than most. The picture attached to this post is of the sculpture Arlen and Dmitri The Groundskeeper made when they spent the entirity of Saturday creating bonfires out of huge wading pool sized puddles that were our firepits after the rain. They, Peter, Griffin and a couple others did a great job getting those fires going and it really took them all day.

Tonight we're going camping with my mom and aunt in a yurt (yert?) at Otter River by Lake Dennison. In fact, I've got to go pack now.
