Funny story that happened over a decade ago....

A very good friend and I were discussing Magick, the tapestry, the nature of the universe, and playing with energy while hanging out at her place when I did something that inspired her to jump up and insist that we travel to see some friends of hers in the Massachusetts. I don't remember what I did, but I suspect that it would have been something that violated the naturally perceived rules of the tapestry.

I feel I must explain that I have no formal training in anything. Sure I can see, and hear those that are not there and watch recorded memories of events past. I still can't talk with them, but since half the time I don't believe in them, that seems natural. My friend on the other hand was a few years older and had spent many years with friends of similar natures and honing her gifts. Plus a life time of always accepting what she sees and hears as truth and therefore she has less trouble communicating.

On the way down to Massachusetts she explained that she was taking me to her old coven, to have me tested and then trained if they accepted me. This after a lecture about constantly changing the flow of reality around me to suit my whim (which wasn't my fault it just happened), and performing wild uncontrolled feats (again wasn’t intentional).

We arrived at an old Victorian style building in the downtown area. This one looked like it housed three apartments, one on each floor. We went to the door of the bottom floor and was greeted by a gentleman at least fifteen years my senior. He was attire was slightly unusual, but he seemed comfortable in it, so I didn’t dwell on it. He welcomed us into his home and offered us some tea. My friend and our host had a brief discussion that I didn’t focus on so, I don’t really remember it. My attention was constantly being pulled towards something the back part of the house. There were a few shiny objects scattered around the house. Now I don’t mean that the objects were physically shiny, but they had an odd glow to them. Eventually my attention was brought back when I was told that we were moving the conversation to the living room. As we moved though the house my feeling of a disturbance just kept growing. In that back of the apartment we came to a large room with a high ceiling.

The room was designed to be very relaxing and natural. I can only describe the room’s appearance something that I would expect to see in a log cabin. It had hard wood floors, wooden walls with a dark brown stain, and large wood beams going across the ceiling. A fireplace on the far wall was burning with a low flame that smelled like pine. Besides the few chairs, a table, and a couch that were all pushed tightly against the walls, the room was completely barren except for a medium sized circular rug in the middle of the room. With all the furniture pushed out of the way the room looked huge. I bet a dozen or more people could stand the middle of the room comfortably.

I had figured out that something in this room was wrong even before we entered it and I knew that it was the source of the disturbance I had felt earlier. Once we were there however, I couldn’t see anything that looked obviously out of place. We sat at the table by door we had just come though when I noticed that there didn’t seem to be any lighting in the room other then the fire place. So it didn’t seem odd when the host asked me to fetch and light a candle stick from the mantle above the fire place. Always eager to please, I stood up and walked across the middle of the room heading directly to the fire place. As I neared the middle of the room the disturbance that I had felt grew overpowering almost to the point of hurting me. Because my friend had told me that it was important to impress our host I was eager to make our host happy by completing this task, but I couldn’t figure out what it was that was disturbing me. The force was becoming stronger and stronger, so to complete my task I eventually had to pause for a moment and concentrate on shifting my focus until the disturbance was no longer bothering me. At which point I continued directly to the fireplace. There I lit the candle, and brought it back to our host. When I returned I had expected a thank you, or at least a smile from the host in gratitude. Instead all I received was a sad and slightly disappointed look. After a few minutes our host blew out the candle and the three of us proceeded to the entryway.

The host explained that it was nice to meet me, but I had failed his test. For if I had truly been sensitive then I would not have been able to cross the room, or at least I would have walked around the carpet at the room's center and not over it like I had done. This was because the coven placed a powerful circle in the middle of the room that was hidden by the carpet. My friend couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong, because she was sure I had potential. Our host apologized for rushing us out, but he had to get ready for the evening’s activities with the rest of the coven. Even though I had failed the test, he sensed something in me and invited both of us back once everything was setup.

My friend and I talked for a few minutes outside and then set off to explore the area when the host burst out the front door enraged. He started yelling at me to leave never return. He also said something about his coven taking years to charge that circle and now it was destroyed. I tried to explain what happened, but it was obvious that now wasn’t the time.

So to make a long story short, still no training, and very little idea of how stuff works.
