Sun Bear's Surprise...or, don't try this in your bathtub !!

   Mon, February 13, 2006 - 8:59 AM
Once upon a summer morning at Campbell Hot Springs (retreat of Leonard Orr..of rebirthing fame..and a former hide out for the mob!) in California...(near Truckee and Lake Tahoe) an Indian Medicine Man named Sun Bear was performing a healing ceremony over the hot springs there...This place had been historically reserved by the native tribes for healing purposes..as the sulfur mineral spring water came out of the ground at 109 degrees, and a long soak (through osmotic action) would pull out whatever toxins were ailing you... it was considered so holy..that for whatever dumb reason the tribes were fighting...none was so important as to deny each other access to the springs...So on this morning as Sun Bear performed his smudge and wafted tobacco smoke into the air...he paused respectfully to listen to the screech of a red-tailed hawk circling above, and in the next moment was visibly shaken... by ominous echos of a responding owl nearby in the patient presence of pine trees...it was a magic moment experienced by the few who had gathered with this great medicine man...i thought it was unusual to hear an owl hooting in the daytime..but it was really his surprise, that gave me insight into it's significance...then immersed me in a deep humility...feeling that our tribute had been acknowledged by the creator...and thankful for the very precious gift that had been provided ...quietly waiting to be discovered and enjoyed unconditionally by his children.

Hey, I just kinda stumbled onto your profile....
cause I loved your very thoughtful and well written response on a thread in the Indigo Children tribe.
I loved reading the blog about Sun Bear. When I was a child, he and his wife would visit once in a while. My dad was a friend of his. I remember the smell of their pipe.
I was reminded that I hadn't seen my Medicine Wheel book in a while, but I found it behind some other books.
After my father died, I had some very mystical experiences in New Mexico and wanted to communicate them to Sun Bear, but I discovered that he had died before my father did.
How magic, your witnessing the communication between those two birds.
I don't get to the countryside much these day, but the last time I did, in the evening I felt a bat swoosh by and the next day there was a falcon that circled overhead as I was glazing my sacred symbol necklaces. I felt that they had been blessed.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your Sun Bear story and bringing up all this stuff for me.

i also stumbled onto your blog...
Your story is very moving... I thought you might like to know that Sun Bear's work is still being carried on today by Wind Daughter who is now the medicine chief of The Bear Tribe. This coming February she is doing ceremony at a hot springs in FL!!! Her website is www.winddaughterwestwinds.org. If you look under 2007 events the flyer is labelled Earth Dance 2007. I encourage you to check it out.
