about me
The bear said, "I don't work here. I'm a bear."
"That's a fine excuse for a man to keep from doing any work, saying he's a bear." The bear said, "but I am a bear." My cat can (and does) sit on command. I start many projects and complete some of them, but need minions to further my plans for <S>world domination</S>. I have attempted to find extra-terrestrial DNA, professionally (no, seriously), though my career as exobiologist (xenobiologist? astrobiologist?) seems to have stalled for now . There is debate about whether or I did in fact examine alien DNA. I do not take sides on the issue but merely report my data. I once ran a genetics lab. I started the company, sold it to bail out my debt. I'm looking for the next adventure. Maybe it involves those skills. Maybe not. I drink copious amounts of coffee. Please do not doubt my commitment to Sparkle Motion.

So after several years of milking everything I could out of my job, it's come to an end. Paychecks stopped coming. Requests to finish projects did not similarly stop at the same time, but I suspect that they will shortly cease.

Short version: I'm back on the job market, and I think I've seen an ad for my dream job. About a year ago, I had an interview for a job I did not get offered (and did not really want) where I was asked to describe my ideal job. The description I gave reads ridi... read more
I've had a night's sleep and for the first time in months, find myself without political blogs and poll projections to check every five minutes (ok, I exaggerate, it was actually every three minutes).

I also find myself in a rather gray mood, despite the elation for an Obama victory. We're soon going to have a president who won't be an international embarrassment, who appears to think about things, who holds true progressive ideals (who has enough neurons to actually form a synapse, a welc... read more
I've grown deeply worried by news of a $700billion bailout of mortgage securities proposed by the Bush administration (if in fact that's what has really been proposed). My most cynical thoughts are that the administration sees their opportunity to siphon money off into the hands of Halliburton and associates as soon to end, so they're making one last grab at huge piles of cash without oversight. My less cynical thoughts are that I just don't trust that Bush and company really think things ...

So it appears that the Burning Man '09 theme is "Evolution: a tangled bank". To be honest, I've never paid attention to the themes in the past. They've had so little to do with why I've participated as to be largely ignored. I can remember the themes in terms of the structure beneath the Man and I have some recollection of the street names (and the attempt at compass headings instead of the clockface address for "the Floating World") but inevitably, I've called the streets A, B, C etc and ...

There are people I have met on the Playa, whom I have not seen in other environments else only met once or twice away from the Burn. And those other environments have, for most, been associated with Burning Man in some manner. I may not know last names, and often find myself hesitating to recall and use a name as it would appear on their passport. Yet there are certainly people, who, after only a few days, I feel close to, with whom I feel strong connections as if I have known them for far...
