It uses a wifi connection to access an account on the internet. At the account, I can setup various widget apps. But the simplest just reads a few RSS feeds.
We have so far been lucky with the H5N1 virus. It is just a matter of time, before something with more than a 3 day incubation period coupled with our global traveling patterns catches up with us.

I just saw a great video on the 2006 TED conference winner: www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/58 He talks of using web crawlers as an early warning system to detect outbreaks. It is a fascinating and inspiring talk. The key is early detection and rapid response.
Kiva is a micro loan based charity. You pick out the entrepreneur in the developing world, and provide some money. The money comes back in credits over a period of time, with which you can use to lend to someone else. And with the convenience of the net, the recipient periodically provides a report in his native language on how things are going.
