TIME OUT NEW YORK

Dub Gabriel, who's spent a career fusing subterranean bass to sun-baked rhythms and modern dub technique, sure has a wide range of friends. Anarchy &amp; Alchemy features guest turns from Yo! Majesty, Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffan and R.E.M. mumbler Michael Stipe, the latter singing on a relatively faithful cover of Suicide's 1977 synth lullaby "Cheree." That track's somewhat of an anomaly on an album that, elsewhere, melds the stark soundscapes of dubstep with the lushness of world-fusion beats. From the tabla-heavy, grimy rhythms of "Mash Out" to the hypnotically bubbling "La Vie s'Envole," Gabriel proves as adept at the genre-smashing game as anyone around.__Dub Gabriel plays at Deep Space Mon 17.__— Bruce Tantum__http://www.timeout.com/newyork/articles/clubs/68714/dub-gabriel

WIRE MAGAZINE (UK)

Relocation from NYC to SF has brought a degree of clarity about the_things of value to be retained on this new album, Dub Gabriel's most_realised and best so far, a move away from the explorations of 2005's_Bass Jihad and more towards what has become a wider mainstream in the_intervening years. No instrumentals here and not so much dubbing these_days either, but the preoccupation with bass still dominates; opening_the set is JahDan (Blakkamoore) fresh from the We Are Raiders E.P._with Matt Shadetek and DJ/Rupture in upscale smooth bashment style on_"Chasing the Paper" followed by Karen Gibson Roc spat spoetics on_"Spirit Made Flesh" which, to my ears, utilises a direct and_intelligent lift of a Scratch produced female vocal scat from Superape_days on a Black Ark style shifting shuffle rhythm – perhaps the_highlight of the set if it weren't for the presence of REM's Michael_Stipe on a reverential reading of Suicide's "Cheree" – with an
string_arrangement that at time evokes an early Velvet's dissonance._Juakali's jump-up "Mashup" has an urgency that makes an understanding_of the lyric unnecessary whilst the centrepiece of the set, Judith_Juileratt's "La Vie Senvole" has minimally undulating electric keys_straight out of a Martin Rev tutuorial but with the nouveaux doo wop_styling replaced by a dolorously whispered tale in French. All these_are enough for the memory of the weaker, some might say 'iller',_tracks to evaporate by the album's end._-Steve Barker_http://www.thewire.co.uk/

BLOGGERTRONIX (CANADA)

Dub Gabriel's sophomore release, was 2 years in the making and is nothing short of an eclectic treasure chest of diverse sounds, flavours snagged from all over the globe, masterfully stirred up and given his unique Dub flavour.__Gabriel's last release, 2005's 'Bass Jihad' received much attention from mainstream and indie media alike, a heavy bass drenched, cultural fusion of electronic musical genius. The album was virtually vocal free, and brimmed with influences from all over the world.__Unlike Gabriel's debut, the new record is thick with steller guest vocalists, legendary singers, and mc's rocking tracks along side equally deadly, on the rise talent.__It isn't often that such seriously diverse artists meld together so well on one record.__'Anarchy &amp; Alchemy' begins with a dark and brooding track about mans obsession with money, 'Chasing The Paper' features vocals by Brooklyn's Jah Dan. The tune flows smoothly into the next track, a trippy reggae
number with a 60's vibe entitled 'Spirit Made Flesh'. This tune carries the spoken word vocals of NYC based poet and singer Karen Gibson, it's truly hypnotic, a song swollen with reverb and lose yourself grooves.__Highlights for me include the atmospheric, 'La Vie S'envole' featuring Judith Juillerat's spoken vocals, a really beautiful track, calming and deep. The lyrics are in french, I'm pretty weak in this language at the best of times, so I'm not totally sure what she's talking about, but that's not an issue...she could be talking about chopping up little bunnies with a hacksaw and I'd be spun to heaven listening to this music... lost.__Another brilliant track on the other end of the audio spectrum is 'Run Down', which features the voices of New York's 'No Surrender'. Jarring electronic screeching, the heavy machinery drone of bass and smart, dark lyrics are top shelf on this song. 'No Surrender' are one of my favorite New York bands, so this is a
real treat for me....if you don't know of them you should.__'Anarchy &amp; Alchemy' is put to bed, tucked in tightly with a song featuring vocals by Michael Stipe (REM), soft hushed lyrics of love, pulsing drums, definite piano and soaring violins, make 'Cheree' a delicious song to lay to album to rest.__This album has is all...if you're a Basshead, theres something for you, if you're a Hip-hop-face there's goodness for you too, Dub-body? sorted, and if you're looking for something really different, emotionally charged and exciting, you must check this out.__Other guest artists featured on the record: Sami Yaffa (New York Dolls), Yo Majesty (Domino records), Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto), Dr. Israel, Kali Boom, Juakali, 77Klash.

CYCLIC DEFROST MAGAZINE (AUSTRALIA)

Dub Gabriel – Anarchy &amp; Alchemy (Destroy All Concepts)_Published by Chris Downton at November 27, 2008 in Reviews Issue 21._Brooklyn, NYC-based dub / downbeat producer Dub Gabriel certainly managed to make some waves in all the right critical circles with his impressive 2005 debut album 'Bass Jihad', with his bass-meets-ragga explorations calling to mind the likes of Rhythm &amp; Sound and Stereotyp whilst receiving plaudits from both the WIRE and XLR8R. Three years on, this follow-up on Gabriel's own Destroy All Concepts label sees him pretty much picking up the baton directly from where 'Bass Jihad' left off, with Dr. Israel, Yo Majesty and Meat Beat Manifesto's Mark Pistel appearing amongst an impressive guest list on ten tracks that increasingly show the influence of dubstep rising to the surface. 'Chasing The Paper' certainly provides a suitably adrenalin-surging opening gambit, with Jahdan's rich ragga-soul vocals taking things into suitably doomy
and apocalyptic territory ("for the money some people will sell anything / for the money some people will kill anything') over a writhing backdrop of surging sub-bass swells and flickering, off-beat rhythms that highlights the aforementioned Stereotyp comparison.__From there, 'Spirit Made Flesh' calls to mind one of Ursula Rucker's urban beat poet sessions gone spectral dub as her limber vocals tumble out over a lazy, swinging backdrop of lovers' rock bass, metallic offbeats and vast dubbed-out sweeps, before the digitally-contorted 'Rundown' brings the hard-edged hiphop stylings to the fore as No Surrender alternately attack and croon into the mic. While dub / hiphop / dubstep offers up the main part of the menu throughout the ten tracks on offer here, it's with some of the more unexpected genre digressions here that some of the biggest highlights arrive. 'La Vie Senvole' sees Judith Juileratt contributing a breathy vocal performance that calls to mind
a Gallic Laurie Anderson as gentle, minimalist electronic rhythms and burbles pulse back and forth amidst harpsichord-like analogue synths, before REM's Michael Stipe takes the vocal spot for perhaps the most surprising closer of all, a cover of Suicide's 'Cheree' that replaces the original version's feedback for soaring strings and harp elements – while it's certainly effective stuff, it manages to call to mind Stipe's 'main' band far more than any of the other tracks on this album. An excellent second album from Dub Gabriel that further cements his status as a producer to keep an eye on. http://www.cyclicdefrost.com/blog/?p=258

ZIKADDICT (FRANCE)
définitivement urbaines (c.a.d.

Heureusement
__http://www.bokson.net/electro/chronique/3259.html

New York Magazine- Dub Gabriel feat. Michael Stipe, "Cheree" (Suicide cover)"How is it that Stipe sounds fresher covering a band from the seventies than he does doing his own band's new material? Maybe Dub Gabriel should sit behind the drum machines for R.E.M.'s next record

    </a>
<div>Happy Holidays every one! Welcome to the December Newsletter.
So Much has been going on. I recently came back from Beijing China which was just amazing, did 3 shows over there including a runway show and party for Givenchy for China fashion week. As soon as I landed went right into the rehearsal room with Yossi Fine for a great gig at the elbow room the following week, packed wall to wall have to thank dj sep for hosting a great night.
Right after that gig, it was right back to the studio where I started recording with Mr. Vigs (Sub Oslo) and Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto,Tino Corp, Consolidated, Disposable heroes of hierocracy) We recorded around 15 tracks of Moogs, Oberheims, Glockenspiels, Wurlitzer’s and tons of echoplex and space echos.
The following week I was back in the studio with Mark Pistel, this time with Process Rebel mixing down a great new track, Pony Girl with the awesome vocals by Yo Majesty, if u don’t know these girls, keep an eye out, they just signed with Domino records and also just got out of the studio working with Basement Jax.
Then yesterday, once again, back in the studio, this time at Hyde Street studio in San Francisco, a legendary studio that has been recording classic albums since the 60s and has a wonderful Neve board.
This time I had Mee (Asian Dub Foundation) and Oz Fritz engineering, an amazing engineer who has man the helm on to many Bill Laswel albums to count as well as the last 3 Tom Waits albums, Ramones, Iggy Pop and many others. I brought over all the analog keys that I worked on at Mark Pistels studio and now got to do some fun stuff and bring in a full string section, which was truly amazing.
Next, I will be leaving back to New York for 2 weeks to take the session to Stratosphere studio owned by James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins it is a great studio. There we will finish up the tracking with Aaron Kant on drums and Tom Gilroy on Guitar and will have the pleasure to have Michael Stipe from REM doing a guest vocals
After that I will be going back to California up to Sonoma to Mix down at Prairie Sun studio with Oz Fritz, so Hope to have the new album done right around the new year, this project has been close to 3 years of my life recording with amazing people around the world and am really excited about it.
Besides that, the other projects N.I.C. in dub has just cam out on Hammer Bass Records in France (My new fav dub label) and will soon come out on Azra in the US, also the new Bambu Brother, coming out on Azra, but still waiting on the release date.
Raiz album on Universal Italy is totally blowing up in Italy and he has been doing some amazing festivals in Italy for the album, def check out the live Mtv clips on Youtube.
All my New York friends, I will be in town till the 23rd, give me a shout, love to see ya!!
Hope every one has a good year, stay posted and many blessings!!!

Fusing the sounds of Africa, Jamaica, the new World and the Mideast, his production credits include his band Ex-Centric Sound System as well as Antibalas, Karsh Kale , Hadag Nahash, Hassan Hakmoun, and Hamsa Lila. In 2006, he produced and released Ex-Centric Sound System's Afro Riddim Sessions Vol 1, featuring Jamaican artists Anthony B., Chezedek, Prezedent Brown, and many more.
ABOUT RAIZ FROM HIS OWN WORDS!
was born in Napoli, Mediterranean Sea. I've been singing since I was a child. I'm totally into mediterranean melody AND reggae/dub. From 1992 to 2002 I've been the lead vocalist for Almamegretta, italian ethnodub/electronica collective - we recorded 7 albums for Sony-BMG (Anima Migrante 1992, Sanacore 1995, Indubb 1996, Lingo 1997, 4/4 2000, Imaginaria 2001 and Venite! Venite! 2002). In 2002 I started my solo career. Since then, I've cut "WOP" (Universal 2004) and "Uno" out now on Universal. I have also recorded two albums with Eraldo Bernocchi/Bill Laswell project Ashes: "Corpus" (CNI 1996) and "Unisono" (Edel Italy 2006). I've collaborated with Venice - based combo "Laboratorio Novamusica" in the recording of the album "Alphabet Music" (Galatina Music 2003), a mix of contemporary and sacred music. I like reading, writing, studying languages, acting (from 2001 to 2005 I've been touring with Cantieri Teatrali Koreja as an actor in their piece "Brecht's Dance" - original music by Kurt Weill revisited by myself and Pier Paolo Polcari; I'll be Moreno in Ago Panini's next film "Aspettando il Sole" - out on 2008) and, of course, singing. I've been collaborating with many artists, such as Massive Attack, Leftfield, Pino Daniele, Adrian Sherwood, Gaudi, Eraldo Bernocchi, Bill Laswell, Stewart Copeland, Teresa De Sio, Luigi Cinque, Zion

Dub Gabriel (Ascend, Bass Jihad) is one of the leading voices in Dub Music today having performed on stage and recorded with the likes of George Clinton, Bill Laswell, DXT, Bomb Squad and Michael Franti among others. Billboard magazine made it a 'critics' pick' and compared his work to Brian Eno and Bill Laswell.

NOVEMBER
N.I.C. IN DUB (Azra -U.S. / Hammerbass-France) Taking tracks in progress and handing them off to some of the top Dub producers in the world turned out to be a brilliant plan and here are the results.
In some cases collaborators would remix the existing tracks into a completely new piece and in others, more instruments and voices were added to the mix.
The list of dubsters includes Dub Gabriel and Infinity, Twilight Circus Dub, Youth (Killing Joke), Dalek, Spectre the Ill Saint, Dr. Marble, JK Flesh, Moth Boy, Teledubgnosis, Amandou Sal, King Salmonella, Kanario d'Bogart, and N.I.C.
Featured on the album from which these tracks were remixed are Keith Levene (P.I.L. the Clash) and producer Scotty Hard (De La Soul, Bill Laswell)
These are some wicked Dub tracks from some of the top producers in the world.

										<div>
JANUARY 6 - 12, 2006

Zeitlist: Culture
Rock Like an Egyptian
a.k.a. The Year in Greg Burk: Metal Went Mideastern, Paul Rodgers became Freddie Mercury, and Diana Krall did not become Ella Fitzgerald
by GREG BURK

Part One: The Resurgence of Nile-ism

The day after the planes hit the towers four years ago, Bush shoulda converted to Islam. Same God, what’s the problem?

Instead, just like in one of those reelybad cinémas d’horreur, George blew the lid off hell, releasing all the Mideast’s demons and undamming a Euphrates of blood that’s soaked into the very pores of our collective unconscious. By 2005, the myths of the Fertile Crescent were even hijacking our music.

Normally we prefer to take our pharaonic river spirits with a dash of musical comedy, like Duke’s “Caravan” or Sam the Sham or the Bangles or even Sun Ra. But when Bush Sr.’s 1991 Gulf War got cranking, things turned ugly. That year, the Swedish black-metal band Marduk (gore-drenched chief god of Babylon) introduced itself to the world with Fuck Me Jesus, whose cover depicted a nude woman pleasuring herself with a crucifix. South Carolina death-metalers Nile raised up their Egyptian-inspired fist in 1995. East Coast metal impalers Mastodon broke through in 2004 with a combination of Moby Dick theme, iconic graphics and an album titled Leviathan (Phoenicia’s and Isaiah’s dread sea serpent). In the past 12 months, though, the musical counterconquest of the West hit high gear. As in:

1. Nile, Annihilation of the Wicked (Relapse). Between twangly pseudo-Ionian Karl Sanders instros, George Kollias’ double-kick fury tosses you into the turbine and spits you out like hamburger. Typically klassy Relapse cover art.

2. Behemoth, Demigod (Olympic). Formed in 1991 (!), our Polish allies Behemoth (the landgoing Phoenician mythic equivalent to Leviathan) spew surging black metal so fusionistically proficient as to rival Tony Williams at his most insane. Guest spot by Karl Sanders! Love this record.

3. Sothis EP (www.sothis.us). Our local black-metal rippers, named after an Egyptian astral goddess, take infinite care with their tools, from their cunningly balanced song structures to their leather &amp; steel regalia. You want spikes? They got spikes.

4. Isis, Oceanic: Remixes &amp; Reinterpretations (Hydra Head). Though the midtempo meditation of the original 2002 texture slab laid down by these L.A.-via-Boston rockers was masterful, last year’s two-CD abstraction thereof (a repackaging of four vinyl EPs on Robotic Empire) makes you want to drop your rifle and smoke kif till doomsday.

5. Dub Gabriel, Bass Jihad (Azra). Keep smokin’. Good title, too. Nobody spins Middle Eastern loop music quite as hypnotically as this East Coast DJ.

6. Jon Hassell, Maarifa Street: Magic Realism 2 (Nyen). Except maybe, y’know, the guy who virtually invented the form. Loops and samples made out of old loops and samples, yet different in all the details. Kind of like humans.

7. Éthiopiques 19: Mahmoud Ahmed 1974, Alèmyé (Buda Musique). Film albino Jim Jarmusch tapped the amazing Éthiopiques reissue series for the soundtrack to last year’s Broken Flowers. His choice was “Mulatu Astatqe,” from way back at Éthiopiques 4, but this latest Mahmoud Ahmed nugget, with its cyclic thud, woozy horns and droning Vox organ, is just as good: North Africans imitating us imitating them at a time when OPEC’s embargo against nations that supported Israel against Egypt in the 1973 Yom Kippur War caused mile-long lines for 55-cent-a-gallon gas. Those were the days.

Step back, all ye wannabe rappers and check out one of
the originals who made hip hop possible. Before Africa
Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Bilal, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets&amp;rsquo;s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar&amp;rsquo;s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel&amp;rsquo;s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar&amp;rsquo;s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel&amp;rsquo;s Current album
&amp;#8220;Bass Jihad&#8221; is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece receiving critical praises worldwide.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
final show Dub Gabriel will perform before moving to
Berlin, Germany</div>
