Erdogan Clashes With Peres, Storms Out of Davos Panel

(Update1)Last Updated: January 29, 2009 15:16 EST

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan walked out of a panel discussion in protest after clashing with Israeli President Shimon Peres at the World Economic Forum over Israel’s operation in the Gaza Strip.

Erdogan, 54, was attempting to respond to Peres’s defense of the military actions after the session had run over its scheduled time and the moderator tried to cut him off. Erdogan, who protested that he was being given less time than Peres, said he would not return to Davos and quickly left the stage.

Erdogan had accused Israel of not respecting the democratic rights of the Palestinians and of using excessive force during its 22-day offensive against Hamas in Gaza that concluded on Jan. 18. Peres, 85, responded that Israel was only trying to defend itself, and accused Hamas of being a “cruel, dictatorial regime.”

Israel and Turkey have full diplomatic relations, extensive trade ties and close security relations. Erdogan, leader of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development party, has been critical of Israel over its actions in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters after he walked out, Erdogan said he was annoyed that the moderator, David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, didn’t let him make his points. He said he “didn’t target” Jews, Israelis or Peres, though he called Peres’ arguments “untrue.” Ignatius couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

Audience Reaction

Members of the audience reacted with silence as Erdogan bolted, leaving World Economic Forum President and founder Klaus Schwab to make a closing statement that attempted to end on a peaceful note. Spectators included Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama. She was in the front row.

Peres’s defense of Israel’s military operation was “belligerent,” said Abu Eesa Niamatullah, an Imam from northwest England. “And I don’t just say that because I’m a Muslim.”

Stuart Eizenstat, a partner at the law firm Covington &amp; Burling LLP and a former U.S. deputy Treasury secretary in the Clinton Administration, said Peres’s comments were the “single best defense of why Israel reacted to Gaza.”

“Nobody can solve this problem with a temper tantrum any more than you can solve it with an Uzi or a Kalashnikov,” Eric Clemons, professor of management and information management at Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. “I’m surprised -- the rest of the day was so hopeful.”

And This is by far a more accurate description.

Stormy debate in Davos over Gaza

The Turkish prime minister has stormed out of a heated debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos over Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan walked out of the televised debate on Thursday, after the moderator refused to allow him to rebut the Israeli president's justification about the war that left about 1,300 Gazans dead.

Before storming out, Erdogan told Shimon Peres, the Israeli president: "You are killing people."

Peres told Erdogan during the heated panel discussion that he would have acted in the same manner if rockets had been falling on Istanbul.

Moderator David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, then told Erdogan that he had "only a minute" to respond to a lengthy monologue by Peres.

Erdogan said: "I find it very sad that people applaud what you said. There have been many people killed. And I think that it is very wrong and it is not humanitarian."

Ignatius twice attempted to finish the debate, saying, "We really do need to get people to dinner."

Erdogan then said: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. I don't think I will come back to Davos after this."

'Understandable'

Amr Moussa, the secretary-general of the Arab League and former Egyptian foreign minister, said Erdogan's action was understandable.

He said: "Mr Erdogan said what he wanted to say and then he left. That's all. He was right," adding that Israel "doesn't listen".

The exchange took place on the second day of the summit, where business and political leaders have been discussing trade, financial regulation and global security.

After grappling with a bleak global economy on the opening day, leaders attending the forum switched to debates on the new administration in the United States and unrest in the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Kamal Nath, India's trade minister, warned that the global economic crisis could fuel protectionism to safeguard national industries and jobs.

Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, used the forum to announce the launch of an emergency appeal for $613m to help Palestinians recover from Israel's attack on Gaza.

Protectionist fears

Nath said that India saw growing signs of protectionism and would respond with its own measures if its exporters were threatened "which will be good for no one."

He said: "We do fear this because one must recognise that at the heart of globalisation lies global competitiveness, and if governments are going to protect their non-competitive production facilities it's not going to be fair trade.

India has raised tariffs on steel to protect local producers, a measure trade experts say was aimed at China, which India does not regard as a market economy.

The deepening economic crisis, and the failure to complete the World Trade Organisation's long-running Doha round on freeing up global commerce, have raised fears that countries will block their partners' exports to protect jobs at home.

Such protectionism, if it led to tit-for-tat retaliation, would intensify the current crisis.

Emerging economies

The economies of India, China and Russia, which have been experiencing rapid growth in recent years, have taken precedence at the forum.

Timothy Garton Ash, professor of European studies at Oxford University, said emerging markets are almost overshadowing the importance of the US economy.

"What is really striking to me about this Davos, is the lack of a sense of a new beginning with Barack Obama," he told Al Jazeera.

"That is not what we've been hearing about in the last 24 hours, we've been hearing about China, about Russia, about India, about emerging economies, and that I think is a very significant fact.

"It's not just the American investment banks that have gone down, it's America's own soft power, and ability to lead that has been badly damaged by the crash."

Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Egypt's minister of trade and industry, said there would be a rush towards emerging markets.

"People understand today that there will not be growth in developed countries for a long time to come, the growth will continue to be in emerging markets, even more than before," he told Al Jazeera.

Gaza appeal

The UN secretary-general said he had been deeply moved by his visit to Gaza and that he had given his word that the UN would help the Gazans in their hour of need.

He said the appeal for fund covered the requirements of the UN and other aid organisations for the next six to nine months.

Ban said it would help provide aid such as medical care and clean water and that an appeal for longer-term needs would be launched later.

Asked about achieving peace in Gaza, Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel's Likud party who was attending the forum, swiftly turned his answer to Iran, which he said was in a "100-yard dash" to get nuclear weapons.

While he did not specify any planned military action, Netanyahu said if Iranian rulers were "neutralised", the danger posed to Israel and others by Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in south Lebanon would be reduced.

Netanyahu said the global financial meltdown was reversible but "what is not reversible is the acquisition of nuclear weapons by a fanatic radical regime".

Meanwhile, Manouchechr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, who is also in Davos, said Tehran had taken note of the intention of Barack Obama, the US president, to withdraw troops from Iraq and believed he should also pull troops out of Afghanistan.

Mottaki told a panel at the forum that Obama had "courage" to say which of the policies of George Bush, the former US president, he disagreed with and said his approach marked a "milestone" away from an era of "might equals right".</div>

    </a>
										<div>Here is why:

I cant support Obama on sending 30,000 more troops into Afghanistan.
That is just going to be a huge disaster.
And the Gaza thing is not a small deal, it is major.
The IDF are the most Racist on the planet.
Read and look at these:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1058758.html

Israeli professor says 'We could destroy all European capitals'

Occupied Jerusalem: 1 February, 2003 (IAP News)

An Israeli professor and military historian hinted that Israel could avenge the holocaust by annihilating millions of Germans and other Europeans.

Speaking during an interview which was published in Jerusalem Friday, Professor Martin Van Crevel said Israel had the capability of hitting most European capitals with nuclear weapons.

"We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets of our air force."

Creveld, a professor of military history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, pointed out that "collective deportation" was Israel's only meaningful strategy towards the Palestinian people.

"The Palestinians should all be deported. The people who strive for this (the Israeli government) are waiting only for the right man and the right time. Two years ago, only 7 or 8 per cent of Israelis were of the opinion that this would be the best solution, two months ago it was 33 per cent, and now, according to a Gallup poll, the figure is 44 percent."

Creveld said he was sure that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wanted to deport the Palestinians.

"I think it's quite possible that he wants to do that. He wants to escalate the conflict. He knows that nothing else we do will succeed."

Asked if he was worried about Israel becoming a rouge state if it carried out a genocidal deportation against Palestinians, Creveld quoted former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan who said "Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother."

Creveld argued that Israel wouldn't care much about becoming a rouge state.

"Our armed forces are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that this will happen before Israel goes under."

<div>Fans shocked as over-sized Mike Tyson makes awards show appearance

    By Paul Kent
    December 16, 2008

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,24804455-5009280,00.html

A SEARCH party for the children of Lennox Lewis was dispatched last night after disturbing pictures of former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson surfaced on the newswires.

Tyson once famously promised, after a fight, to eat Lewis's children.

Nobody ever thought he would make good on it.

However, those fears now appear realised after Iron Mike was caught presenting at the sixth annual Video Game Awards in Culver City, California, at the weekend.

He walked on to the stage wearing a silk shirt, slacks, and a belly that simply refused to quit.

Some - bizarrely - thought he was carrying with him a plate of pancakes before realising it was simply his chin.

Or chins.

His appearance shocked many fight fans who remembered, often fondly, the hard, chiselled body of the self-professed Baddest Man On The Planet.

It was in this heyday that Tyson launched one of boxing's most astonishing careers, cleaning the ranks on a a steady diet of devastating punches and bad intentions.

His career burned as quickly as it did brightly, though - and effectively reached its end when he dined on Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997.

Never have the dangers of a diet high in gristle and sinew been more plain to see.

From head to toe, Tyson looks like the thumb of a boxing glove.

A perfect oval.

The awards ceremony was a small step in Tyson's road to recovery, which will never be fully reached.

In 2003, Tyson filed for bankruptcy despite him having earned more than $US300 million during his career.

Since retiring in 2005, he has spoken of becoming a missionary to escape his reputation in America but recently opened a fund account that required a $50 monthly direct debit.

He declined the direct debit, noting that he could not guarantee the money would be there each month.

"I'm not really liquid these days," he said.

Triumphantly, Tyson's motto is far more noble these days: Will work for food.</div>

    </a>
<div>I did not know she was still alive and also did not know Suzy knew her. Very well apparently. Would go as far as to say "Idolized her".
Even did an interview with her: http://www.drsusanblock.com/ccbilltheater/BettiePage.htm

Well anyway, so long Bettie!

Bettie Page, 1950s Pinup Girl, Cult Figure Decades Later, Dies

By David Henry

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Bettie Page, the 1950s pinup girl whose natural looks and risque fetish poses triggered a cult following four decades after she turned her back on modeling, has died. She was 85.

Page died late yesterday in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a heart attack more than a week ago, her agent Mark Roesler said in a statement.

“She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality,” said Roesler. “She is the embodiment of beauty.”

The busty “Dark Angel” from Tennessee was one of the most- photographed women of her era, striking a chord with men’s camera clubs and sparking outrage in Congress for her nude snapshots. Page’s image, complete with black hair bangs and naughty smile, appeared on magazine covers, playing cards, wallpaper and comic books in the 1990s, inspiring retrospective tributes from celebrities such as Madonna, Demi Moore and Uma Thurman.

The college-educated beauty queen who disappeared from the public eye after 1957 was unaware of her renewed popularity until “Entertainment Tonight” broadcast a television segment about her almost 40 years later. She had disowned her glamour lifestyle after becoming a born-again Christian in 1959, and later battled mental illness in Florida and California.

“Bettie Page is the last great icon of the 1950s,” James Swanson, co-author of “Bettie Page: The Life of a Pinup Legend,” said in a 1996 interview with NBC’s Real Life program. “Like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, she brought something modern to the era. She’s like the girl next door, the greatest American pin-up and that’s why she’s eternal.”

Early Years

Bettie Mae Page was born on April 22, 1923, in Nashville, Tennessee. The second of six children, she helped raise her younger siblings while the family traveled around the U.S. in search of work. Page’s mother placed her daughters in an orphanage after divorcing her husband, who was sentenced to two years in an Atlanta penitentiary for stealing a policeman’s car.

At the age of 10, Page began to mimic actresses and perform songs for the other girls at the orphanage before her mother, who worked as a hairdresser during the day and in a laundry at night, reclaimed her children after a year.

Page took refuge from her traumatic family life in local community centers, where she learned to cook, sew and study hard enough to top her class at high school. She was a member of the drama club, helped edit the school newspaper and was voted “The Most Likely to Succeed.” She won a $100 scholarship to Peabody College in Nashville, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education.

Three Husbands

In February 1943, she married Billy Neal, the first of her three husbands, and moved to San Francisco, where she had her first modeling assignment for a local furrier. While Neal served in the Mariana Islands during World War II, Page lived in Nashville, Miami and Port au Prince, Haiti. In 1947, she filed for divorce and moved to New York.

Three years later while walking on Coney Island, she met police officer Jerry Tibbs who had an interest in photography and assembled Page’s first portfolio.

Tibbs introduced her to camera clubs, men’s hobbyist groups that sometimes acted as a front for erotic photography, and Page’s career took off. She then appeared in publisher Robert Harrison’s girlie magazines Wink, Flirt and Beauty Parade. In January 1955, she was the centerfold model in Hugh Hefner’s fledgling Playboy magazine, one month before actress Jayne Mansfield appeared as the publication’s Playmate.

“She had a saucy innocence that is both contemporary and provocative, and also nostalgic,” Hefner said.

Media Mogul

Page, who claimed she ignored media mogul Howard Hughes’s request for a screen test in 1955 because she didn’t want to sleep with him, also studied acting under Herbert Berghoff at Sea Cliff Summer Theater on Long Island. The apprenticeship helped her gain parts in New York stage productions and on television, once appearing on “The Jackie Gleason Show.”

Some of her most celebrated snapshots were taken in 1954 during a session with photographer Bunny Yeager at the Africa USA wildlife park in Boca Raton, Florida. They included nude poses with two cheetahs and scenes in a leopard-patterned jungle outfit that she made herself.

Her “Dark Angel” image stemmed from bondage and fetish sessions for Irving Klaw’s Movie Star News. Klaw, who paid $80 for four hours’ work at his studio in Greenwich Village, New York, required sadomasochistic shots to meet the demand of high- profile, educated clients. His sister Paula created the sets and helped Page develop the fetish image.

‘Very Sweet’

“Paula was one of the nicest women I’ve ever known in my life,” Page said. “Only Paula was allowed to tie us up. She was very gentle, caring and considerate. She never tied any ropes too tight. She was very sweet.”

A Congressional investigation initiated by Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver in 1955 called Page as a witness and put Klaw out of business, though he had no case to answer because his models were never nude. The evidence of obscenity had included more- explicit poses that Page had done for camera clubs after a drinking session one night at a party. The Congressional probe is said to have contributed to her decision to give up modeling.

Throughout the 1960s, Page attended Bible schools in Los Angeles, Chicago and Oregon, helping teenage mothers and visiting jails. Her breakdown in 1972 after divorcing third husband Harry Lear led to four months’ treatment in Florida’s Jackson Memorial Hospital and 20 months in Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, California. She also had numerous run-ins with the law, including a charge of assault with a deadly weapon after brandishing a knife at her landlady who didn’t provide Page with rent receipts.

Pop-Culture Revival

Page’s pop-culture revival emanated from artwork by Robert Blue and Olivia de Berardinis, who drew on her fantasy and fetish work. David Stevens also featured Page in “The Rocketeer” comics from the early 1980s, prompting an avalanche of similar publications based on her persona.

In later years, she lived in California and collected royalties from her work as a model after signing with Curtis Management Group. In 2005, Time Warner Inc. and HBO Films released “The Notorious Bettie Page,” a feature film starring Gretchen Mol as Page.

Page avoided the camera lens after her modeling years, though she was photographed with Hefner at Playboy’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2003.

“I want people to remember me as I was,” she said in a Playboy interview in 1998.

Page was divorced three times and had no children.

The Rich Are Staging a Coup This Morning ...a message from Michael Moore

Friends,

Let me cut to the chase. The biggest robbery in the history of this country is taking place as you read this. Though no guns are being used, 300 million hostages are being taken. Make no mistake about it: After stealing a half trillion dollars to line the pockets of their war-profiteering backers for the past five years, after lining the pockets of their fellow oilmen to the tune of over a hundred billion dollars in just the last two years, Bush and his cronies -- who must soon vacate the White House -- are looting the U.S. Treasury of every dollar they can grab. They are swiping as much of the silverware as they can on their way out the door.

No matter what they say, no matter how many scare words they use, they are up to their old tricks of creating fear and confusion in order to make and keep themselves and the upper one percent filthy rich. Just read the first four paragraphs of the lead story in last Monday's New York Times and you can see what the real deal is:

"Even as policy makers worked on details of a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, Wall Street began looking for ways to profit from it.

"Financial firms were lobbying to have all manner of troubled investments covered, not just those related to mortgages.

"At the same time, investment firms were jockeying to oversee all the assets that Treasury plans to take off the books of financial institutions, a role that could earn them hundreds of millions of dollars a year in fees.

"Nobody wants to be left out of Treasury's proposal to buy up bad assets of financial institutions."

Unbelievable. Wall Street and its backers created this mess and now they are going to clean up like bandits. Even Rudy Giuliani is lobbying for his firm to be hired (and paid) to "consult" in the bailout.

The problem is, nobody truly knows what this "collapse" is all about. Even Treasury Secretary Paulson admitted he doesn't know the exact amount that is needed (he just picked the $700 billion number out of his head!). The head of the congressional budget office said he can't figure it out nor can he explain it to anyone.

And yet, they are screeching about how the end is near! Panic! Recession! The Great Depression! Y2K! Bird flu! Killer bees! We must pass the bailout bill today!! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Falling for whom? NOTHING in this "bailout" package will lower the price of the gas you have to put in your car to get to work. NOTHING in this bill will protect you from losing your home. NOTHING in this bill will give you health insurance.

Health insurance? Mike, why are you bringing this up? What's this got to do with the Wall Street collapse?

It has everything to do with it. This so-called "collapse" was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people's home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it's because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn't afford. Here's the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of medical bills. Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage "crisis" may never have happened.

This bailout's mission is to protect the obscene amount of wealth that has been accumulated in the last eight years. It's to protect the top shareholders who own and control corporate America. It's to make sure their yachts and mansions and "way of life" go uninterrupted while the rest of America suffers and struggles to pay the bills. Let the rich suffer for once. Let them pay for the bailout. We are spending 400 million dollars a day on the war in Iraq. Let them end the war immediately and save us all another half-trillion dollars!

I have to stop writing this and you have to stop reading it. They are staging a financial coup this morning in our country. They are hoping Congress will act fast before they stop to think, before we have a chance to stop them ourselves. So stop reading this and do something -- NOW! Here's what you can do immediately:

1. Call or e-mail Senator Obama. Tell him he does not need to be sitting there trying to help prop up Bush and Cheney and the mess they've made. Tell him we know he has the smarts to slow this thing down and figure out what's the best route to take. Tell him the rich have to pay for whatever help is offered. Use the leverage we have now to insist on a moratorium on home foreclosures, to insist on a move to universal health coverage, and tell him that we the people need to be in charge of the economic decisions that affect our lives, not the barons of Wall Street.

2. Take to the streets. Participate in one of the hundreds of quickly-called demonstrations that are taking place all over the country (especially those near Wall Street and DC).

3. Call your Representative in Congress and your Senators. (click here to find their phone numbers). Tell them what you told Senator Obama.

When you screw up in life, there is hell to pay. Each and every one of you reading this knows that basic lesson and has paid the consequences of your actions at some point. In this great democracy, we cannot let there be one set of rules for the vast majority of hard-working citizens, and another set of rules for the elite, who, when they screw up, are handed one more gift on a silver platter. No more! Not again!

Yours,
Michael Moore
MMFlint@aol.com
MichaelMoore.com

P.S. Having read further the details of this bailout bill, you need to know you are being lied to. They talk about how they will prevent golden parachutes. It says NOTHING about what these executives and fat cats will make in SALARY. According to Rep. Brad Sherman of California, these top managers will continue to receive million-dollar-a-month paychecks under this new bill. There is no direct ownership given to the American people for the money being handed over. Foreign banks and investors will be allowed to receive billion-dollar handouts. A large chunk of this $700 billion is going to be given directly to Chinese and Middle Eastern banks. There is NO guarantee of ever seeing that money again.

P.P.S. From talking to people I know in DC, they say the reason so many Dems are behind this is because Wall Street this weekend put a gun to their heads and said either turn over the $700 billion or the first thing we'll start blowing up are the pension funds and 401(k)s of your middle class constituents. The Dems are scared they may make good on their threat. But this is not the time to back down or act like the typical Democrat we have witnessed for the last eight years. The Dems handed a stolen election over to Bush. The Dems gave Bush the votes he needed to invade a sovereign country. Once they took over Congress in 2007, they refused to pull the plug on the war. And now they have been cowered into being accomplices in the crime of the century. You have to call them now and say "NO!" If we let them do this, just imagine how hard it will be to get anything good done when President Obama is in the White House. THESE DEMOCRATS ARE ONLY AS STRONG AS THE BACKBONE WE GIVE THEM. CALL CONGRESS NOW.

By Josh Levs
CNN

(CNN) -- Some lawmakers lashed out at the CEOs of the Big Three auto companies Wednesday for flying private jets to Washington to request taxpayer bailout money.

"There is a delicious irony in seeing private luxury jets flying into Washington, D.C., and people coming off of them with tin cups in their hand, saying that they're going to be trimming down and streamlining their businesses," Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-New York, told the chief executive officers of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors at a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee.

"It's almost like seeing a guy show up at the soup kitchen in high hat and tuxedo. It kind of makes you a little bit suspicious."

He added, "couldn't you all have downgraded to first class or jet-pooled or something to get here? It would have at least sent a message that you do get it."

The executives -- Alan Mulally of Ford, Robert Nardelli of Chrysler and Richard Wagoner of GM -- were seeking support for a $25 billion loan package. Later Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reversed plans to hold a test vote on the measure.

An aide told CNN that Reid decided to cancel the test vote when it became clear the measure would fall well short of the 60 votes needed. Reid did, however, make a procedural move that could allow a vote on a compromise, which several senators from auto-producing states were feverishly trying to craft.

At Wednesday's hearing, Rep. Brad Sherman, D-California, pressed the private-jet issue, asking the three CEOs to "raise their hand if they flew here commercial."

"Let the record show, no hands went up," Sherman said. "Second, I'm going to ask you to raise your hand if you are planning to sell your jet in place now and fly back commercial. Let the record show, no hands went up."

The executives did not specifically respond to those remarks. In their testimony, they said they are streamlining business operations in general. Video Watch Nardelli ask for help »

When contacted by CNN, the three auto companies defended the CEOs' travel as standard procedure.

Like many other major corporations, all three have policies requiring their CEOs to travel in private jets for safety reasons.

"Making a big to-do about this when issues vital to the jobs of millions of Americans are being discussed in Washington is diverting attention away from a critical debate that will determine the future health of the auto industry and the American economy," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said in a statement.

Chrysler spokeswoman Lori McTavish said in a statement, "while always being mindful of company costs, all business travel requires the highest standard of safety for all employees."

Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker pointed to the company's travel policy and did not provide a statement elaborating.

But those statements did little to mollify the critics.

"If it is simply the company's money at stake, then only the shareholders can be upset or feel as it might be excessive," said Thomas Schatz, president of the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste.

But in this case, he said, "it's outrageous."

"They're coming to Washington to beg the taxpayers to help them. It's unseemly to be running around on a $20,000 flight versus a $500 round trip," Schatz added. iReport.com: Should the Big Three be bailed out?

The companies did not disclose how much the flights cost.

Analysts contacted by CNN noted that the prices vary with the size of the plane and the crew, and whether the aircraft is leased or owned by the company.

Analyst Richard Aboulafia of the Teal Group said that $20,000 is a legitimate ballpark figure for a round trip corporate jet flight between Detroit, Michigan, and Washington.

When asked whether they plan to change their travel policies as part of the restructuring needed to shore up their finances, none of the companies answered directly. But they said they have cut back on travel in general as revenues have fallen.</div>

<div>A Ticket to The Hague for Dick Cheney?

http://www.harpers.org/#hbc-90003846

By Scott Horton

Gene Burns is one of the nation’s most popular talk radio hosts. For years he has dismissed accounts of torture; America, he has said, does not torture. But last night, after watching Torturing Democracy and realizing that he had not understood how important and serious an issue torture had become, Burns abruptly changed his tune. Here’s a transcript of his remarks.

I now believe that some international human rights organization ought to open an investigation of the Bush Administration, I think focused on Vice President Dick Cheney, and attempt to bring charges against Cheney in the international court of justice at The Hague, for war crimes. Based on the manner in which we have treated prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, and the manner in which we have engaged in illegal rendition–that is, surreptitiously kidnapping prisoners and flying them to foreign countries where they could be tortured by foreign agents who do not follow the same civilized standards to which we subscribe.

I’ve always said that I’ve thought that even at Guantánamo Bay the United States was careful to stay on this side of torture. In fact, you may recall that on a couple of occasions we got into a spirited debate on this program about waterboarding, and whether waterboarding was torture. And I took the position that it was not torture, that it was simulated drowning, and that if that produced information which preserved our national security, I thought it was permissible.

And then I saw Torturing Democracy.

And I’m afraid, now that I have seen what I have seen, that I was wrong about that. It looks to me, based on this documentary, as if in fact we have engaged in behavior and practices at Guantánamo Bay, and in these illegal renditions, that are violations of the international human rights code.

And I believe that Dick Cheney is responsible. I believe that he was the agent of the United States government charged with developing the methodology used at Guantánamo Bay, supervising it for the administration, and indulging in practices which are in fact violations of human rights.

A large part of the population still credits the Bush Administration’s absurd claim that it never embraced or applied torture to detainees as a matter of policy. Two recent documentaries, Alex Gibney’s Oscar-winning Taxi to the Dark Side (for which I was both a consultant and interviewee) and Sherry Jones’s PBS feature Torturing Democracy investigate the administration’s policies and conduct. Both draw from decision-makers inside the administration and soldiers on the frontline.

The administration did its best to spike both films. Taxi was to be aired on the Discovery Channel, but with Discovery Communications then in the process of going public and facing sensitive SEC clearances, executives apparently decided not to risk provoking the anger of the White House. As I reported elsewhere, PBS also found that it had no network space for Torturing Democracy until January 20, 2009—the day the Bush Administration decamps from Washington.

Why was the administration so concerned about these two films? The conversion of Gene Burns supplies the answer. No one who sits through these films, I believe, will be able afterwards to accept the official version of events. George Bush has good reason to be afraid of too many Americans watching these documentaries.</div>

The truth us that Democrats will use any means to steal power by convincing anyone they Are the power of right and good, They are fools and only fools follow them. Money will always be conservative and will never relinquish itself to Democrats. The only rich democrats are very few and misguided individuals in the entertainment industry. Oh and that guy who runs Apple too. Well a few silicon valley types are liberal as well. But they'll wake up. We'll all have to wake up after Obama fails. I mean how can Obama succeed really?
The entire Democrat structure is based on fallacy. Therefore it cannot succeed. The europeans and others that embrace Obama are largely godless heathen anyhow who embrace their "individuality".
It never worked it can't work and a whole new generation of Americans are going to learn the hard way. Liberal philosophies lack the essential ingredient. Money. So they TAX to create GOVERNMENT TO MAKE UP SOCIAL PROGRAMS TO STEAL IT.</div>
