Frequency of a shriek (blog entry) My baby's ability to produce an ear shattering scream at very high volume is truly amazing. I couldn't make that much noise if you paid me. You would think that she is training to be the next Rob Halford. The acoustics of the baby's bedroom actual... read more

Return to normalcy (blog entry) It's been almost 5 months since Evelyne was born, and I finally feel like parenthood is a normal thing. It has given a focus to my life that was always lacking. One of the consequences of parenthood is that you are suddenly forced to think 18 year... read more

Reason #2 (blog entry) So when I was searching for a reason why to breed, I saw numerous friends and coworkers who seemed to be walking examples of why NOT to breed: they were the hangdog, irritable exhausted parents, with screaming horrible children and no lives. They ... read more

Daddylan (blog entry) “So what’s it like to be a dad?”
I love this question. And I was dying to know the answer before my beautiful daughter Evelyne was born. The simple answer to the question is that there is no simple answer to the question. Having a kid is one of ... read more

My baby's ability to produce an ear shattering scream at very high volume is truly amazing. I couldn't make that much noise if you paid me. You would think that she is training to be the next Rob Halford. The acoustics of the baby's bedroom actually make it worse, so after about two minutes with Evie shrieking in her room, I really feel it in my ear drums. She's got singing talent encoded in her genes, so we know she'll be great singer someday.
Somebody should design and market a set of headphones that parents can wear while dealing with a shreiking infant. It would have a built-in low pass filter that blocks the highest frequencies (the baby shrieking), but would still allow you to hear normal adult speech. It's easily done with existing technology.
Of course, a pair of 25 cent styrofoam earplugs does the trick just as well.

We sleep with a baby monitor that lets us listen to sounds coming from Evelyne's crib. It's merely a one-way radio that's either on or off, with one dedicated band. Normally Evelyne sleeps pretty heavily, so we're lucky if we hear a few squeeks each night. Last night I awoke to hear a low, abstract noise, sounding like a distorted voice, then Evelyne responding with a squeek. In my half-awake state, my reptile brain first assumed that an intruder was in the house, in Evelyne's room. Then my human brain decided that this didn't make sense. If a person was going to break into my house, they wouldn't be talking to the baby.
Then I heard the sound again, and Evelyne squeeked again. Now more awake, I realized that the first sound coming from the radio was something like the sound of a call being intercepted by a cordless phone (a crossed signal). It was still very ominous, (especially from Evelyne's point of view), but I was certain it wasn't an intruder in my house. As I drifted back to sleep, I though of another explanation: aliens. Aliens were trying to abduct my daughter. Or they had already abducted her, and they were bringing her home via transporter beam. Either way, it was aliens.
Evelyne seems to be OK, so I think it's nothing to worry about. But if those aliens ever sneak back into my house, they're in BIG trouble.
